Probe continuesinto traffic accident
SOUTHINGTON -- The investigation continues into an accident in which a Youngstown man died after being thrown from his vehicle early Monday at U.S. Route 422 and Phalanx Mills Road.
The Ohio State Highway Patrol here said Edward Wilson, 53, was westbound on 422, pulling a trailer when Sadie Winkleman, 49, of Newton Falls, pulled into his path from Phalanx Mills Road.
Wilson swerved, but Winkleman's vehicle hit the trailer, rolling Wilson's vehicle twice in the 5:10 a.m. accident.
Winkleman and her passenger and three passengers with Wilson were treated for injuries.
Police take plants
YOUNGSTOWN -- Police confiscated a five-gallon bucket with 18 marijuana plants from the yard of a house on Carroll Street, where they'd gone Monday night to assist a juvenile court employee.
The court has ordered random checks on the house, where three children live. No one answered the door, police said.
Girl is arrestedin center damage
YOUNGSTOWN -- A 13-year-old female resident of the Lincoln Place Residential Center for Youth is accused of flooding three floors of the center's area for women by breaking a sprinkler head. The center is on East Indianola Avenue.
Clothing and other items belonging to the center's residents were damaged by the water Friday night. The 13-year-old also set off the center's fire alarm, Mahoning County deputy sheriffs said. They arrested her on charges of making false alarms and criminal damaging.
Fight stopped
ELLSWORTH -- Deputy sheriffs confiscated three baseball bats while investigating reports that two men were going to fight Sunday night at Gault and Palmyra roads.
Deputies said six cars were parked along Gault Road in anticipation of the fight. The two men had a dispute over a woman.
The men shook hands and resolved their conflict before the deputies left the area.
Austintown burglary
AUSTINTOWN -- A 33-year-old Bentwillow Lane woman told police someone overnight entered an unlocked 1992 black Nissan parked in the driveway.
She said $50, 50 CDs and a remote opener for her garage door were missing from the car.
The garage was opened and looted, she said. Missing items include a $2,000 remote-control helicopter and its $650 hand-held transmitter, and tools.
Shots at party
GIRARD -- Police want to question a Sharon, Pa., man about his possible involvement in the firing of shots during a party early today.
According to a police report, a woman at the party at Shannon Terrace Apartments got a call about 3 a.m. The caller was upset that she was at the party, and he was invited over to talk about it.
The report said that a van containing one or two men approached Highland and Park avenues where people from the party were standing, and shots were fired.
The suspects were being sought this morning.
Board bids for bus
NORTH LIMA -- The South Range Local Board of Education authorized district officials to advertise for bids for a new school bus.
Superintendent James Hall told the board at its meeting Monday that because of the growth in the district, the board will probably also have to buy a new bus next year at this time because of an expected enrollment increase.
Assaults investigated
CRAIG BEACH -- Mahoning County deputy sheriffs are investigating two assaults that occurred on Grandview Road this weekend.
In one assault, a man was attacked by three people in his driveway at 11 p.m. Sunday. The man said that an unidentified object was placed around his neck by one of the attackers while another attacker punched him in the face. He was knocked unconscious.
In the other assault, a man said the estranged husband of his girlfriend punched him in the face and threatened to kill him Saturday morning in the parking lot of a grocery store.
