Person dies in fire
EAST LIVERPOOL -- An adult is dead after a duplex fire early today. Firefighters were called about 5:45 a.m. to 228 W. Seventh St., after a fire broke out in the two-story duplex, said assistant Fire Chief Bill Burns. The structure was fully engulfed when firefighters arrived.
They found the body inside the structure. Details on the deceased's identity and gender were unavailable. No other injuries have been reported, Burns said. The Columbiana County Coroner's office and the state fire marshal's office are investigating. No other details were available.
Hit-and-run
MERCER, Pa. -- Pennsylvania State Police here are investigating a hit-and-run accident on State Route 358 and Fredonia Road in Perry Township Monday afternoon.
Police said the driver of a red four-wheel drive vehicle pulled from a stop sign on Fredonia Road and struck the side of a vehicle driven by Virgie M. Jordan, 61, of Fredonia Road, Hadley, Pa.
Police said Jordan, who was wearing a seat belt, was not injured. Her vehicle sustained light damage to the left side, they said. The driver of the four-wheel drive vehicle continued traveling east on state Route 358.
Two injured in accident
MERCER, Pa. -- Two people were taken to area hospitals after the car in which they were traveling struck a guardrail on the Interstate 80 ramp Monday night.
Pennsylvania State Police here said Nathan Gaskey, 26, of Hartman, Ark., who was approaching Interstate 79 south in Findley Township, was driving at an unsafe speed when his vehicle rolled over and struck the guardrail.
He and a passenger in the vehicle, Teresa Perkins, 18, of Altus, Ark., were taken by ambulance to United Community Hospital in Grove City. Perkins was treated for minor injuries.
Gaskey was later transported to Allegheny General Hospital in Pittsburgh. His condition was not available.
Resignations accepted
SHARON, Pa. -- The school board accepted these resignations Monday night: Jason Cheskawich, band director, effective immediately; Terri Leone, elementary teacher, effective Sept. 1; Michelle Kovach, certified teacher aide, effective immediately; and Jennifer Tamber, Sharon Family Center employment specialist, effective July 30.
Items stolen from boat
SALEM -- A man living on the 300 block of Rose Avenue told police someone removed rods, reels and other fishing tackle from his boat recently. The craft was parked in his driveway when the theft occurred. The equipment was valued at several hundred dollars.
Board bids for bus
NORTH LIMA -- The South Range Local Board of Education authorized district officials to advertise for bids for a new school bus.
Superintendent James Hall told the board at its meeting Monday that because of the growth in the district, the board will probably also have to buy a new bus next year at this time because of and expected enrollment increase.
Marijuana found
NEW CASTLE, Pa. -- Pennsylvania State Police say they were tipped off by a woman that her 14-year-old son was growing suspected marijuana in his bedroom.
The Scott Township woman found 13 marijuana plants growing in the boy's room Monday and contacted police. The boy later admitted he was growing the plants, police said. Police said their investigation continues and no charges have been filed.
Assaults investigated
CRAIG BEACH -- Mahoning County deputy sheriffs are investigating two assaults that occurred on Grandview Road this weekend.
In one assault, a man was attacked by three people in his driveway at 11 p.m. Sunday. The man said that an unidentified object was placed around his neck by one of the attackers while another attacker punched him in the face.
He was knocked unconscious by the assault.
In the other assault, a man said the estranged husband of his girlfriend punched him in the face and threatened to kill him Saturday morning in the parking lot of a grocery store.
