Pharmacist honored
YOUNGSTOWN -- Alfred Dudek, 79, of 940 Larkridge Ave., received the Philippine Liberation Medal and the Philippine Republic Presidential Unit Citation Badge for his service in the Philippines during World War II. Dudek was an Army surgical technician stationed at the 500-bed 116th Station Hospital in 1944 and 1945. After leaving the military, Dudek attended Youngstown State University and graduated in 1952 from Ohio Northern University as a pharmacist. He worked at Cornersburg Pharmacy, Chaney Pharmacy and Syms and Gray drug stores.
Officers elected
GIRARD -- VFW Post 419 elected Timothy O'Malley commander for the 2001-2002 year. Other officers are: senior vice commander, Michael Tankovich; junior vice commander, Walter Macker; quartermaster, Robert Stanton; judge advocate, Walter Morosko; surgeon, Harold Cramer; chaplain, Stefano Colucci and three-year trustee, Stephen Milicich.
League elects president
ARLINGTON, Va. -- Timothy O. Fanning, retired rear admiral Navy Reserve, was elected to a two-year term as national president of the Navy League of the United States at its convention in Reno, Nev. Fanning, of Virginia Beach, Va., has been active in the Navy League for 25 years. The league is a 74,000-member civilian organization which supports sea services.
Free health screenings
BUTLER, Pa. -- The Mobile Outreach Team from the Veterans Affairs Butler Medical Center will provide free health screenings and evaluations to veterans from 2 to 6 p.m. Tuesday at the Medical Center, 325 New Castle Road; from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Thursday at American Legion Post 432 in Wheatland; July 24 at VFW Post 6233 in West Middlesex; and Aug. 2 at VFW Post 1338 in Sharon. Veterans are asked to bring their discharge papers.

Crew chief decorated
Air Force Reserve Staff Sgt. Diane R. Filkorn was decorated with the Air Force Commendation Medal while assigned as a crew chief with the 910th Air Wing Maintenance Squadron, Youngstown Air Reserve Station, Vienna. She is a daughter of Harry F. and Ruth A. Filkorn, 697 Roosevelt St. N.W., Warren, and is a 1981 graduate of Harding High School, and a 2000 graduate of Kent State University.
