Championship writingin 50 lessons
NEW YORK (AP) -- Writing coach Paula LaRocque's new book can help other writers write. "Championship Writing: 50 Ways to Improve Your Writing" is a collection of 50 columns that appeared in Quill, the magazine of the Society of Professional Journalists.
In the introduction, LaRocque, assistant managing editor and writing coach at The Dallas Morning News, points out that although the columns were written largely for media writers, the material "pertains to all workplace writing," which "is (or should be) informational." She stresses the importance of writing simply and of imparting information instead of impressing readers with big words and overblown descriptions: "Write as you speak -- if you speak well."
Although several media-related topics are covered, including editing the wire, writing photo captions and writing headlines, many more chapters cover ground useful for any writer. Also helpful is a chapter pointing out the correct use of some frequently misused words and expressions.
The book is published in paperback at $18.95 by Marion Street Press.
Nickel goes far in 'Icons' series
NEW YORK (AP) -- Who says a nickel doesn't buy anything anymore? Taschen launched its series of "Icons" books, each of which features 200 photos and costs $9.99 -- or, 5 cents a photo.
Each volume is a compact, 192-page softcover based on one of Taschen's full-size art, design or photo books.
Among the first titles released: "Chairs," featuring sit-down designs by Marcel Breuer, Frank Lloyd Wright and Eero Saarinen; "Encyclopaedia Anatomica," with bones, brains, veins and other anatomical details shown in wax models from the Museo la Specola in Florence, Italy; and "Native Americans," with photos by Edward S. Curtis.
Other topics include roses, robots, tattoos, rock album covers, Egypt and various art and photo collections.
