NILES -- Antique appraisals will be offered during the city historical society's Heritage Day activities Aug. 5 at Ward-Thomas Museum, 503 Brown St. Qualified appraisers will give current value of any two items for a $5 fee. Heritage Day will also feature hand-quilting and blacksmith demonstrations; tours of the 14-room Victorian-era mansion; barbershop music; a bake sale; and a white elephant sale. Admission is $4 for adults, $2 for students and free for children under 5 years of age.
Car show for kids
AUSTINTOWN -- A Toy Car & amp; Truck Show for children ages 5 through 13 will be part of Mahoning Valley Olde Car Club's 23rd annual Antique, Classic & amp; Special Interest Car Show and Flea Market on Aug. 5 at Austintown Middle School, Mahoning Avenue. Trophies will be awarded in two age divisions and three classes: hand-built by participant, ready-built and pinewood derby or similar hand-built vehicles. In addition, soap box derby racers will be on display.
Admission is $2. Vendors may register now for $5 or $15 on show day. Gate proceeds will go to Freddie Seitz, who is being treated for Goldenhar Syndrome at University of California at Los Angeles Craniofacial Center. Festival attractions
WEST FARMINGTON -- Amish pony pulling and Rockin' Country Cloggers are among the features at the 11th annual Farmington Festival from Aug. 3 to 5 in Village Park, one block north of state Route 88. The pony pulling will be at 6 p.m. Aug. 3; music by Fort Huntsburg Band will be at 7 p.m. Aug. 4; and the cloggers will perform at 3 p.m. Aug. 5. There will also be pancake breakfasts during the weekend, a roast beef dinner Aug. 4 at United Methodist Church and an afternoon parade Aug. 5.
Poetry slam
YOUNGSTOWN -- Live jazz and the works of N.U.S.E., a poetry group from Cleveland, will be featured at the second annual Urban Slam at the YSU DeBartolo Stadium Club on Fifth Avenue 7:30-9:30 p.m. July 28. All poetry must be original, no vulgarity allowed. The event is sponsored by the YSU NAACP and African Studies. Competitors pay $5 to register, and must sign in at 7 p.m. The winner gets $100.
