Field constructionprogressing at park
GIRARD -- Construction of an all-purpose practice field in Liberty Park is progressing. Mayor James Melfi said the field is a joint venture of the city and board of education. The football field-size facility adjacent to the Pony League baseball field will be used for football, marching band and soccer practices.
The work is being done by the city street department and school district's building and grounds staff. Lafarge Construction Materials of McDonald is donating the heavy equipment. Grass will be planted in the fall and the field will be ready next year.
Melfi pointed out the field is being built even tough the city is having financial problems.
"You've got to be a little creative," the mayor said, noting volunteers are needed to complete the project.
Mosquito spraying
HOWLAND -- Alexander Pest Control will spray the township for mosquitoes from 9 p.m. Monday to 5 p.m. Tuesday.
Residents should close windows, keep pets indoors and not leave any food outside during those times.
In case of rain, the spraying will take place the following evening.
The company has been contracted to do a fourth spraying in August.
Family Night at YMCA
NILES -- Trumbull County YMCA will have its first Family Night from 6 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at Eastwood Family YMCA.
Members and their families should take lawn chairs, flotation devices, rafts and inner tubes to watch the movie "Free Willy" at the pool.
Cost is $5 per family. Refreshments will be served. Reservations can be made at the Warren or Eastwood YMCA.
Woman hospitalized
YOUNGSTOWN -- A 31-year-old woman was treated at St. Elizabeth's Health Center Friday afternoon after she was beaten with a baseball bat.
The woman told police she was walking on Shehy Street near Pearl Street at 12:45 p.m. Friday when a blue car pulled up and someone addressed her as "Linda."
When the woman, whose name is not Linda, kept walking, one of two people in the car got out and hit her in the back and elbows.
The wooden bat broke during the assault.
The assailant got back in the car and it sped away.
Fund-raiser for food
COLUMBUS -- The Ohio State Bar Association is trying to raise $25,000 and collect 2,500 pounds of food for nine impoverished southeast Ohio counties.
The donations will be channeled through the Southeastern Ohio Regional Food Center, which serves Gallia, Hocking, Jackson, Lawrence, Meigs, Morgan, Perry, Vinton and Washington counties. The food bank can purchase $5 in food for $1 because of government subsidies, so the $25,000 would buy $125,000 in food.
To donate, send a check to Project Food Bank, c/o the OSBA, P.O. Box 16562, Columbus 43216-6562.
