BLOOD DRIVES

BLOOD DRIVES
CLEVELAND -- The American Red Cross hopes to collect 500 pints of blood from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday at the Dr. Charles Drew Blood Drive at Cleveland Browns Stadium. Dr. Drew is a pioneer in transfusion medicine. In addition to collecting blood, sponsors hope the drive will raise awareness of sickle cell disease, which is treated with blood transfusions. Ninety percent of Americans with sickle cell disease are black, and Hispanics make up much of the remaining 12 percent. Registered donors at the July 21 blood drive will receive a tour of Cleveland Browns Stadium, admission to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and the Great Lakes Science Center, and a commemorative T-shirt. Donors must be at least 17 years old, weigh at least 105 pounds, and be in general good health. It is safe to donate blood every 56 days.
