UNITED WAY Traveling volunteer plans to stop, help in Youngstown

The traveling United Way volunteer plans to volunteer in all 50 states in one year.
YOUNGSTOWN -- Glenn Parkhurst, the traveling United Way volunteer, will be in Youngstown on Monday through Thursday raising awareness for the need for volunteers.
Parkhurst will do volunteer work Tuesday at Youngstown Area Goodwill Industries, 2747 Belmont Ave.; Wednesday at the Potential Development Program, 209 W. Woodland Ave.; and Thursday at the Mahoning County Council for Retarded Citizens day camp at Leonard Kirtz School, 4801 Woodridge Drive.
He will also be a special guest at the 2001 Pacesetter Campaign Kickoff and Salute to Volunteers dinner from 5 to 7 p.m. Wednesday at the D.D. and Velma Davis Education and Visitor Center at Fellows Riverside Gardens in Mill Creek Park. Pacesetter organizations run early summer campaigns that set the pace for the Youngstown/Mahoning Valley United Way fall general campaign.
Mission: Parkhurst quit his job as a radiation protection supervisor at a nuclear power plant in southern New Jersey and financed his volunteering mission by selling his house.
His motto is "United States the United Way," and his goal is to perform volunteer work in all 50 states and the District of Columbia in one year.
By performing various volunteering jobs, he said he can identify the needs and opportunities in communities, create awareness about volunteering activities, fulfill his mission of raising awareness for the need for volunteers and bring attention to and thank volunteers.
