TRUMBULL COUNTY Grand jury indicts man

The man, who is facing assault charges, is being held in the county jail in lieu of a $1 million bond.

WARREN -- A 58-year-old Warren Township man was indicted Friday on three charges of felonious assault on a peace officer and a misdemeanor count of domestic violence.
The grand jury indicted Gerald Harnar of Parkman Road. He is scheduled to be arraigned next week, officials said.
If convicted, Harnar could face up to 301/2 years in prison. Harnar is being held in the county jail in lieu of a $1 million bond.
Harnar, who has said he is innocent, has told authorities that he plans to represent himself.
About the case: Warren Township police say they went to Harnar's home Monday, after receiving a 911 call that Harnar assaulted his 85-year-old mother.
"Mrs. Harnar has a huge bruise on her arm," said Lt. Donald Bishop.
Bishop said that when officers arrived at Harnar's home, he fired three shots at them. The officers were not injured.
Township police then called surrounding agencies and asked for assistance. Harnar refused to come out of his home or talk to police.
Bishop and Chief Thomas Rush said Harnar was armed with a .22-caliber rifle and had ammunition throughout the one-story home.
After waiting for three hours, officers decided to enter the home. Harnar shot and wounded Deputy Mike Davis of the Trumbull County Sheriff's Department.
Davis, 31, was released from Forum Health Trumbull Memorial Hospital on Wednesday, officials said.
Harnar's indictment means a preliminary hearing that was scheduled for Tuesday in the courtroom of Judge Terry Ivanchak of municipal court will be canceled.
Other business: In other matters, the grand jury also indicted Gary L. Smith, 40, of Parkman Road Southwest on a voluntary manslaughter charge.
Smith, who pleaded innocent July 5 in municipal court, is accused of killing Donald Dukes, 41, of Oak Street Southwest around 10 p.m. July 4 during a fight.
Police said Dukes was stabbed as he stood in front of an Oak Street residence during an altercation with Smith. Dukes lived nearby.
Police said they are not sure what caused the fight or why the two were fighting. Police said they believe the two had been friends.
