State project lists abandoned mines from area for work



COLUMBUS -- Ohio will spend $158,000 to make environmental and safety improvements to abandoned mines in three Columbiana County communities and one Trumbull County township.
The four are among 38 abandoned mine reclamation projects in 19 counties to be done this year as part of a $10-million program. Money for the work comes from the U.S. Department of the Interior, state grants and bond money forfeited by former mine operators.
The state will spend $40,000 to stabilize two mine shafts in Vienna Township, Trumbull County.
The three Columbiana County projects are:
USealing nine mine entries in Salineville, costing $28,000.
URepairing a mine drainage system in Elkton that is causing flood damage to a home, costing $60,000.
UMaking improvements to a forfeited strip mine off Trinity Church Road in Wayne Township, costing $30,000.
