Pleads innocent
BROOKFIELD -- A man arrested after holding police at bay for 61/2 hours Tuesday has pleaded innocent to two misdemeanor charges.
David R. Cornman, 36, of Yankee Run Road, entered the pleas Thursday before Judge Ronald Rice of Trumbull County Eastern District Court.
Cornman is being held in the county jail in lieu of a total $75,000 bond on misdemeanor charges of domestic violence and possession of a firearm while intoxicated.
Police said Cornman got into an argument with Teresa Dericco, 37, at her home at 675 state Route 7 and injured her about 11 p.m. Tuesday.
She fled to a neighbor's home and police were called. Cornman held police at bay until 5:30 a.m. Wednesday when he threw a handgun out of the house and surrendered.
Scuffle with deputies
WARREN -- A 55-year-old man scuffled with Trumbull County deputy sheriffs during his arraignment on tax charges, deputies said.
Ralph Geer, of Youngstown-Kingsville Road, Fowler, refused to accept a copy Thursday of his indictment on five charges of filing false and fraudulent state tax returns. A Trumbull grand jury indicted Geer on the charges last week.
Judge Andrew Logan set Geer's bond at $50,000, and when deputies tried to apprehend Geer he began wrestling with them, court officials said. Geer was apprehended and taken to the county jail.
A pretrial hearing is set for 9 a.m. Wednesday.
Going on the road
BAZETTA -- Trumbull County commissioners' meeting at the fairgrounds Wednesday was just the first of several regular meetings they plan to hold in locations across the county.
"Hopefully, people in different parts of the county will come to see how government is done," said Commissioner Joseph J. Angelo Jr.
Commissioners are required by law to meet 50 times a year, he said. They are planning to have four or five of those meetings in places other than the commissioners building. Locations in Liberty, Newton Falls, Southington, Kinsman and Warren Township are being discussed, he said.
Waterline contract
BAZETTA -- A Petersburg company was awarded a $585,000 contract to lay a waterline from the Warren city water plant to Johnston Plank Road in Champion.
The 24-inch line will provide more consistent water pressure for customers in portions of Champion and Bazetta townships, and allow for future development in the area, said Thomas Holloway, Trumbull County sanitary engineer.
The project is largely funded by the Ohio Public Works Commission, with Trumbull County and the city of Warren jointly contributing 16 percent of the total cost.
Excavation Technologies Inc. could begin work on the waterline by the end of August or September.
To get grant
WEST FARMINGTON -- West Farmington will receive a $14,000 water and sewage disposal grant from the U.S. Department of Agriculture's rural development program. The village will use the money to make emergency repairs to its water system, including the replacement of water pumps as well as mechanical and electrical improvements.
All comers in ring
BAZETTA -- Former Golden Gloves champ Rusty Rosenberger of Niles will take on all comers under the tent in the Trumbull County Fair's Historical Village starting at 6 tonight.
Contenders can pay $10 for a round in the ring with Rosenberger, who also was New Jersey's middle weight champ. Only blows to the upper body -- but not the head -- will be permitted.
The event, sponsored by Buena Vista Cafe and R & amp; R Floors, both in Warren, is a fund-raiser for Junior Fair and 4-H programs.
Bridge closing
GIRARD -- Liberty Street bridge will be closed to traffic and pedestrians Monday from 10 p.m. to midnight because of a fireworks display at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Festival.
Arrested in break-ins
LAKE MILTON -- Police have arrested a North Jackson teen and accused him of participating in three break-ins here. Juan Rosario, 18, of Gladstone Road, was arraigned Thursday on three felony counts of breaking and entering, a felony count of complicity to breaking and entering, a felony count of grand theft, a misdemeanor count of theft and a misdemeanor count of failure to appear on a subpoena.
Police said they subpoenaed Rosario to question him about recent break-ins at a barbershop, a home and a car dealership in Milton Township. He failed to appear for questioning, and a warrant was issued for his arrest.
