Agriculture secretary to deliver check

MERCER, Pa. -- The Mercer County Grange Fair was expecting an important visitor today.
Samuel Hayes, Pennsylvania secretary of agriculture, was to stop by the fairgrounds at 10 a.m. to deliver a check for $14,917.
The money is to be used for capital improvements of the grounds on state Route 58, including a new public address system, upgrading of electrical service in the commercial building and erecting a 40-by-52-foot building with a cement floor and electrical service.
The annual fair is in full swing this week, coinciding with Hayes' visit.
The grant money comes from the state's Community Revitalization fund handled by the Department of Community and Economic Development. The money is to be used to assist local economic development and community enhancement projects.
The fair will have to match the amount of the grant.
The grant is part of a larger $115,000 package of grants approved for various Mercer County projects last month.
Other sizable grants in the package include $20,000 for improvements to the McNeilly Business Center in Greenville and $20,000 for Mercer County Area Agency on Aging to buy equipment for its new geriatric center being built in Hermitage and its Greenville Senior Center.
