Mayor plans town hall meeting

LOWELLVILLE -- Mayor Joseph Rossi is concerned that village residents are being left out of a decision over a proposed contract with Browning Ferris Industries.
Rossi thinks the village could get more from BFI and plans to hold a town hall meeting before council's next regular meeting to discuss the proposal and the state of the village.
His announcement comes just days after a special council meeting Monday that was sparsely attended, owing to council's late notice, he said.
Council provided 24 hours notice to the press, as required by state law. The law does not specifically require such notice to the public, however, but only that council must formally establish a reasonable method by which the public can determine the time, place and purpose of any special meeting.
The mayor and council have been debating the proposed agreement with BFI to substantially increase the amount of ammonia it sends to the village's waste treatment plant.
The current proposal, which could bring in at least $36,000 a year toward village operations, was sent to a third reading during council's regular meeting Wednesday and is up for final adoption.
No date has been set for Rossi's town hall meeting.
