GREENVILLE, PA. Officials seek parking fix

Special parking tags for residents might be one solution, a borough official said.
GREENVILLE, Pa.-- The borough is seeking a way to ease speeding and parking problems along Davis Street and Ridgeway and Alan avenues when Thiel College is in session.
Residents of that area have complained that motorists they believe to be students from the college use their streets for parking, and about 10 people showed up at a borough council meeting Tuesday to find out what officials plan to do about it.
Possible solutions: Peter Nicoloff, borough manager, said erecting "resident parking only" signs might be illegal but there are other options the borough is considering.
Greenville could issue a residential parking tag and limit on-street parking to those vehicles bearing that tag, he said.
Borough council also could look at banning parking on the street from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. daily, he said.
Nicoloff said borough officials also can talk to Thiel College officials about encouraging students to park on campus.
Thiel students pay $50 a year for campus parking but some apparently prefer to park for free in the neighboring residential area.
Police have ticketed vehicles left in no-parking zones or blocking driveways and that has provided some temporary relief but a permanent solution is apparently required, Nicoloff said.
"It's only a problem when Thiel's in session," he said.
Dealing with motorists speeding through the area may be a bit tougher.
Municipal police aren't allowed to use radar, Nicoloff said.
