UNITY -- A motorcyclist is dead after his cycle hit the back of a stopped BFI garbage truck on state Route 14 just west of Waterford Road as the driver was outside picking up garbage, according to the Ohio State Highway Patrol. The deceased was identified as Matthew S. Buksa, 25, of Oakdale Road, Darlington, Pa., who was eastbound at 8:45 a.m. Tuesday when the motorcycle he was riding hit the left rear of the eastbound truck, which was partly on the road and partly on the berm, the patrol said. The truck driver was not injured.
Zoning recommendation
COLUMBIANA -- City planning commission will recommend to council a zoning change from residential to commercial for about seven acres along the south side of state Route 14. Bob Belding, city planning and zoning officer, said the property east of McDonald's owned is owned by Michael Kluchar, of Columbiana, who plans to sell it to someone who would put a grocery store there. Sale of the property, however, is contingent on the zone change, Belding said.
Board OKs contracts
LISBON -- The village school board has approved several personal service contracts. Peter Marra will receive $6,855 as transportation supervisor and an additional $1,500 for doing garage maintenance. David Brooks will serve two days a week for a maximum of 96 days as a special education supervisor next year. He will be paid $17,138. Steven Rodi was hired as stadium caretaker for $5,167. Elizabeth Gallo was hired as a sixth-grade teacher at McKinley Elementary.
Teen charged in theft
NEW CASTLE, Pa. -- Pennsylvania State Police have charged a 17-year-old Ellwood City boy with burglary, theft and receiving stolen property involving the theft of a .357 Magnum-caliber revolver from a Wayne Township residence in October. Police said the boy's name is being withheld because he is a juvenile. The gun is valued at $100. The charges were filed Monday.
Repairs close Route 7
NORTH LIMA -- State Route 7 between state Routes 165 and 164 in Beaver Township is closed today through Friday so that crossing repairs can be made by the CC & amp;P Railroad Co., according to the Ohio Department of Transportation.
Police probe burglary
ELLWOOD CITY, Pa. -- Ellwood City police are investigating a burglary at the New Deal Bar at 202 Franklin Ave. Police said early Tuesday someone entered the bar and took cigarettes, alcohol, pop, food and some change.
Burglary thwarted
SHARON, Pa. -- Police said a woman in an apartment on South Sharpsville Avenue scared away a burglar by telling him she could see him. The woman told police she heard a noise at her window around 1:50 p.m. Tuesday and, when she went to investigate, spied a man reaching into the window in an apparent attempt to steal her Sony PlayStation. "I see you," she told the man. "I see you, too," was his reply, she said. The man and three companions standing outside with him then ran away.
Embezzlement case
CLEVELAND -- A federal grand jury has indicted Deidre A. Nicholas, 40, of Heston Drive, Lake Milton, and charged her with embezzling postal money orders.
She is accused of issuing money orders without receiving payment. If found guilty, Nicholas faces up to five years in prison and $250,000 fine.
Also indicted was Robin F. Tate, 37, of Lynn Drive, Girard, on charges of bank fraud and possession of stolen mail.
Tate engaged in a scheme to defraud a bank by cashing fraudulent checks using the account information and the identity of a legitimate customer, which resulted in the loss of $1,400, the government said.
Tate is also accused of possessing account information stolen from the mail. If convicted, Tate faces up to 30 years in prison and $1 million fine on the fraud charge and up to five years in prison and $250,000 fine on the mail count.
