Man hospitalized
NILES -- Police wrestled down a man who threatened to jump from the Main Street viaduct over the Mahoning River Tuesday night.
It was the fifth such episode involving Arthur C. Jones, 35, of North Main Street, police said.
He jumped from a bridge earlier this year, injuring himself, police said.
After removing him from the viaduct, police took Jones to St. Joseph Medical Center.
Donations accepted for victims of house fire
LIBERTY -- Donations are being accepted in an account at the Firstar Bank branch in Giant Eagle on Belmont Avenue on behalf of the Joseph Land family, whose residence at 418 S. Davis Street, Girard, was damaged by fire July 1.
The Red Cross provided temporary shelter, new beds, food and clothing, but the family lost nearly everything. Those wishing to donate furniture can call the family directly at (330) 509-2629, Red Cross officials said.
Juvenile accused
WARREN -- A juvenile is being accused of shooting a 50-year-old man in the head with a pellet gun.
The boy was being held at the Trumbull County juvenile justice center for arraignment later today.
Police say the victim was standing at the Nevada and Hamilton intersection when he was shot in the back of his head. He was not seriously hurt.
Report: Checkpointnetted 11 DUI arrests
MINERAL RIDGE -- Weathersfield Township police, in cooperation with Niles and Girard police and the Ohio State Highway Patrol, made 11 DUI arrests at a checkpoint on Route 422 in McKinley Heights, across from McMenamy's.
Capt. Joseph Consiglio told township trustees Tuesday that the checkpoint, conducted June 8 between 10 p.m. and 3 a.m., was arranged by Weathersfield officer Dan Knight.
Consiglio said that of 500 vehicles passing through the checkpoint, 50 were diverted for further checks, netting 11 DUI arrests, eight citations for operating without a license, one warrant arrest and three drug arrests.
Triathlon scheduled
WARREN -- Trumbull County YMCA will conduct a youth triathlon July 28.
Children ages 5 to 13 can participate in age groupings. Entry fee is $16 for members and $20 for nonmembers.
Triathlon includes running, bicycling and swimming and will begin at the Warren YMCA and end in Packard Park.
Woman indicted on embezzlement charges
CLEVELAND -- A federal grand jury has indicted Deidre A. Nicholas, 40, of Heston Drive, Lake Milton, and charged her with embezzling postal money orders.
She is accused of issuing money orders without receiving payment. If found guilty, Nicholas faces up to five years in prison and $250,000 fine.
Also indicted was Robin F. Tate, 37, of Lynn Drive, Girard, on charges of bank fraud and possession of stolen mail.
Tate engaged in a scheme to defraud a bank by cashing fraudulent checks using the account information and the identity of a legitimate customer, resulting in the loss of $1,400, the government said.
Tate is also accused of possessing account information stolen from the mail. If convicted, Tate faces up to 30 years in prison and $1 million fine on the fraud charge and up to five years in prison and $250,000 fine on the mail count.
Company files appeal
WARREN -- A Vienna company has filed an appeal in Trumbull County Common Pleas Court seeking a reduction in tax valuation.
ATD Corp. of Ridge Road contends the county board of revision set its taxable value at $2,446,465 and fair market value at $6,989,900 when those amounts should be $1,988,865 and $5,682,474.
The board, made up of county commissioners, an auditor and a treasurer, hears appeals of the values assigned to property.
The board's decisions can be appealed in common pleas court or with the Ohio Board of Tax Appeals in Columbus.
ATD manufactures racks that hold parts in automotive assembly plants.
