Funeral director: Village must pay
LISBON -- A local funeral director told village council that a new law makes the village responsible for the cost of funerals for village indigents.
Daniel Weber said the state used to pay $750 to cover the costs of the funerals, but will no longer do so.
Weber noted that the $750 didn't cover all costs. He said cremation and burial cost about $1,200.
Now, municipalities and townships are expected to pay those costs.
Weber said the legal residence of the indigent person would determine who is to pay the funeral costs.
In other matters, council approved hiring Kelly Green as a part-time dispatcher for the police department and changed dispatcher Dean Stock's status from part time to full time.
Fred Carlisle and John Hancock were named police lieutenant and sergeant, respectively.
