LIBERTY -- Donations are being accepted in an account at the Firstar Bank branch in Giant Eagle on Belmont Avenue on behalf of the Joseph Land family, whose residence at 418 S. Davis St., Girard, was damaged by fire July 1. The Red Cross provided temporary shelter, new beds, food and clothing, but the family lost nearly everything. Those wishing to donate furniture can call the family directly at (330) 509-2629, Red Cross officials said.
Man stabbed in chest
YOUNGSTOWN -- Ralph Wilson, 50, of Clyde Street showed up at St. Elizabeth Health Center about 12:05 a.m. today, bleeding heavily and holding his chest. Reports show that he refused to give hospital staff any information other than his last name. He was in serious condition this morning with four stab wounds. Wilson's girlfriend told police that she last saw him at 6 p.m. Tuesday, when he left her Lexington Avenue home on foot. Police were unable to gather any information about the stabbing.
Shots fired at house
YOUNGSTOWN -- Shots were fired at a house in the 300 block of Ferndale Avenue about 1 a.m. today. The 42-year-old victim told police that she was in her living room and heard three to four shots, and then saw that a bullet had struck a wall near the front door.
No motive for the gunfire was given.
Woman indicted onembezzlement charges
CLEVELAND -- A federal grand jury has indicted Deirdre A. Nicholas, 40, of Heston Drive, Lake Milton, and charged her with embezzling postal money orders.
She is accused of issuing money orders without receiving payment. If found guilty, Nicholas faces up to five years in prison and a $250,000 fine.
Also indicted was Robin F. Tate, 37, of Lynn Drive, Girard, on charges of bank fraud and possession of stolen mail.
Tate engaged in a scheme to defraud a bank by cashing fraudulent checks using the account information and the identity of a legitimate customer, resulting in the loss of $1,400, the government alleges.
Tate is also accused of possessing account information stolen from the mail. If convicted, Tate faces up to 30 years in prison and a $1 million fine on the fraud charge and up to five years in prison and a $250,000 fine on the mail count.
New Lowellville school
LOWELLVILLE -- Groundbreaking for Lowellville Local Schools' new K-12 campus is scheduled for 11 a.m. July 18. The school board has awarded a contract of about $1.6 million for construction of the campus and a $30,637 contract for sidewalks and sanitary sewer lines to Marucci and Gaffney Excavating Co.
The new school facilities are planned for construction near the football stadium at Cooper Avenue and Dickson Street.
Paint grenade attack
CANFIELD -- A paint grenade lobbed at a house in the 7500 block of West Calla Road at 10:50 p.m. Tuesday failed to open and did no damage. A Mahoning County deputy who spoke to the homeowner learned that a blue car, possibly a mid-1990s Buick, was seen speeding away after the paint grenade hit the house and landed in a flower bed.
The homeowner said there have been various acts of criminal damaging and criminal mischief at his residence. No motive was given for the vandalism.
Report: Checkpointnetted 11 DUI arrests
MINERAL RIDGE -- Weathersfield Township police, in cooperation with Niles and Girard police and the Ohio State Highway Patrol, made 11 DUI arrests at a checkpoint on U.S. Route 422 in McKinley Heights, across from McMenamy's.
Capt. Joseph Consiglio told township trustees Tuesday that the checkpoint, conducted June 8 between 10 p.m. and 3 a.m., was arranged by Weathersfield Officer Dan Knight.
Consiglio said that of 500 vehicles passing through the checkpoint, 50 were diverted for further checks, netting 11 DUI arrests, eight citations for operating without a license, one warrant arrest and three drug arrests.
