BROOKFIELD Standoff ends with surrender

Police said they found six spent shells in the house.
BROOKFIELD -- A 61/2-hour standoff ended peacefully early today when a man gave up his gun and surrendered.
Police Chief Daniel Faustino said David R. Cornman, 36, of Yankee Run Road, was to be taken today for a psychiatric evaluation at Forum Health North Side Hospital in Youngstown.
Cornman is be arraigned Thursday in Trumbull County Eastern District Court here on charges of domestic violence and possession of a firearm while intoxicated.
Teresa Dericco, 37, who lives at the house where the standoff occurred, 675 state Route 7, complained to authorities of back and arm injuries.
Argument: Faustino said Cornman got into an argument at Dericco's residence about 11 p.m. Tuesday. The woman was hurt when she was slammed onto a bed, the chief said.
While Cornman remained in the house, Dericco ran to a neighbor's and police were called. The woman told police that what sounded like fireworks going off could be heard from inside the house.
Cornman, who had threatened to commit suicide, would not talk to any officers at the scene, saying he would only talk with Brookfield Patrol Officer Scott Thompson, whom he knows.
Thompson was summoned and opened negotiations with Cornman.
By 5:30 a.m., Thompson talked Cornman into throwing his .38-caliber pistol out of the house and surrendering.
When police entered the home, they didn't find any fireworks, but rather six spent shells fired from the pistol.
Dericco has been undergoing cancer treatment, the chief said. She was taken to Sharon Regional Health System.
