NY-PENN LEAGUE Scrappers lose lead in eighth

Mahoning Valley starts a three-game home series Wednesday with Staten Island.
JAMESTOWN, N.Y. -- A day off might be exactly what the Mahoning Valley Scrappers need.
The Scrappers took a 4-0 lead into the eighth inning Monday against the Jamestown Jammers but allowed five runs in the bottom half to lose 5-4 at Diethrick Park.
Mahoning Valley (6-15), which is idle today because of the major league All-Star Game, now has lost five of its last six games and holds last place in the Pinckney-Stedler Division of the New York-Penn League.
The Batavia Muckdogs (14-5), who defeated Utica 6-5 in 10 innings Monday, lead the division, nine games ahead of the Scrappers.
Up next for the Valley's Class-A short-season affiliate of the Cleveland Indians is a three-game series against the Staten Island Yankees beginning Wednesday at Cafaro Field.
The games, which begin at 7:05 p.m., are a rematch of the 2000 New York-Penn League championship series, won by the Yankees 2 games to 1.
Lead lost: With the Scrappers leading 4-0 entering the last of the eighth Monday, relief pitcher Mark Turnbow allowed four earned runs on two hits in 2/3 of an inning.
Nate Fernley (0-2) took the loss after relieving Turnbow and allowing the final run in his 1/3 inning.
Prior to the Jammers' rally, Scrappers pitchers Marcos Mendoza, Jeffrey Pennington and Scott Sturkie combined on a shutout through seven innings.
Mendoza and Pennington made their first appearances for Mahoning Valley.
The Scrappers' offense was limited to six hits, two of them singles by catcher Angel Bastardo, who drove in one of the runs while raising his batting average to .289.
Designated hitter Zach Sorensen and third baseman Francis Finnerty singled for the Scrappers, while first baseman Rickie Morton and right fielder Miguel Quintana each doubled.
Sorensen and Quintana each drove in one run.
Willie Collazo (3-1) pitched the final two innings for Jamestown, an Atlanta Braves affiliate, to earn the victory.
