Car crashes into bar
YOUNGSTOWN -- After the car she was driving crashed into Irish Bob's at 3602 South Ave., police said 19-year-old Isabelle Flowers of New York City told them she's never had a driver's license. The accident at the South Side bar at 9:15 p.m. Monday resulted in the arrest of Flowers and a front-seat passenger who police said obstructed their investigation. The passenger, a 30-year-old West Lucius Avenue woman, said another car cut them off, causing the crash.
Police said when they tried to talk to Flowers, the passenger blocked their way, telling Flowers what to say.
Vandalism, theft
YOUNGSTOWN -- Someone cut the fence at Warner Cable at 755 Wick Ave. on the North Side, damaged three vans with a tire iron and stole a generator, police said. The vandalism and theft occurred sometime Monday. Damage to the vans was limited to broken windows.
Furnace, tank stolen
YOUNGSTOWN -- A maintenance man for Choice Homes told police that an unoccupied house at 501 Willis Ave. on the South Side was broken into sometime Monday. Missing is a Lennox furnace, Lennox hot water tank, pipes from under a sink, kitchen sink plugs and refrigerator doors. The home was last occupied about a week ago.
New zoning inspector
CRAIG BEACH -- Village council here has appointed Andrew "Corky" Peregrin to serve as village zoning inspector beginning next week.
Peregrin will replace Mayor Camille Gaia III, who has served as zoning inspector since January 2000. Some council members have said they think it is illegal to serve as both mayor and zoning inspector.
In addition, some council members have said they think Gaia has not been fulfilling his duties as zoning inspector.
The village's last zoning inspector was laid off with other village employees when council repealed a 1-percent income tax in 1998. Council is planning to place a 1-percent income tax on the ballot in the village this November.
Multiple charges
YOUNGSTOWN -- Deputy Greg Taillon thought he was just stopping a speeder Monday on Powers Way. But he discovered that the driver, Anthony W. Melia, of Struthers, hasn't had a license since 1985 and has racked up 13 court suspensions since then. Melia, 47, of Sexton Street, didn't have his seat belt on, and the plates on the 1985 Plymouth Voyager he was driving are registered to a 1992 Oldsmobile, according to Taillon's report. After issuing Melia citations for speeding, having no license, not wearing a seat belt and having fictitious plates, the deputy had the vehicle towed and dropped Melia off at work on Poland Avenue.
Teen admits theft
BERLIN -- A Hoyle Road mother called the Mahoning County Sheriff's Department on Monday evening and turned in her 14-year-old son, who admitted stealing a bicycle over the weekend from a Berlin Lake campground. The bike was discovered by the boy's father in a garage at their home. The boy, in a written statement, told deputies that he and his friend talked about stealing a bike after watching "Gone in 60 Seconds," a movie about car thefts.
Housing code changes
YOUNGSTOWN -- The city's Housing Code Task Force will conduct a public hearing from 5-7:30 p.m. July 26 in city council chambers to discuss proposed changes to Youngstown's housing codes. Copies of the housing codes are available at the city planning and zoning office on the sixth floor of city hall.
Counterfeit bill
SHARON, Pa. -- A counterfeit $20 bill used at a newsstand in Sharon has been traced to a gas station in Brookfield. A man used the bill at the Korner News Stand, 54 W. State St., around 9 a.m. Monday.
The man who spent it is a resident of a group home in Sharon and had been given the money as an allowance, police said. Home supervisors told police they got the bill at a gas station in Brookfield.
