Probe of 'Drano bombs'nets 10 suspects
LOWELLVILLE -- At least 10 juveniles are considered suspects in the making of four "Drano bombs" found here Saturday. Chief William Vance said police are still investigating after bombs made of common household chemicals were found near the Cooper Street bike trail and homes on Quisner and Walnut streets. Two bombs were live. One was detonated by the Youngstown Police Department Bomb Squad. "These things are capable of blowing somebody's hand off," Vance said.
Road rage reported
BOARDMAN -- Township police are investigating a report of road rage. A township woman told police she was driving south on Glenwood Avenue Friday when she had a near collision with an oncoming car. The woman said she turned around to follow the car and the driver pointed a handgun at her and said "pow." The woman gave officers a description of the vehicle, its driver and license plate.
National car show
LIBERTY -- Mahoning Valley Mustangs is planning a Mustang Club of America 2002 National Car Show at the Holiday Inn MetroPlex for July 12-14 next year. Proceeds will benefit Forum Health Tod Children's Hospital. The Youngstown-based club expects more than 350 Mustangs from the United States, Canada and other countries. The Mustang Club of America has its headquarters in Atlanta, and awards between three and five national shows every year to its regional chapters. Difficult investigation
CANONSBURG, Pa. (AP) -- Investigators said they may never know what caused the fire that killed 28 horses at The Meadows harness racetrack barn because it was so intense and went undetected for so long. The facility had passed a fire inspection only three days before the blaze. Mario LaBrasca, whose family owned four horses that died in the blaze, was fined $50 in June for storing flammable fluids in the barn. LaBrasca said there were no flammable liquids in the barn the night of the fire.
Austintown boys cited
GIRARD -- Two Austintown boys have been cited into Trumbull County Family Court after playing war games in Liberty Park Saturday. The boys, ages 14 and 16, face delinquency charges of aggravated menacing. Police Capt. Frank Bigowsky said "playing Army" in the park is inappropriate behavior. Bigowsky said the two were with another boy and a girl, also from Austintown. All were dressed in camouflage clothing. Bigowsky said three Girard boys went to the park. While two of them stayed in the woods, a 12-year-old approached the four from Austintown. He was handcuffed and threatened with what turned out to be a lighter in the shape of a gun. Eventually, the boy was released and told to run or he would be shot. The girl and one of the boys from Austintown were not aware the handcuffs and "gun" were going to be used, and they will not be charged, the captain said. Police were attempting to determine where the handcuffs were purchased.
Indecent exposure
AUSTINTOWN -- A 15-year-old girl told police that a man exposed himself to her at the Giant Eagle at 5220 Mahoning Ave. at 11:05 p.m. Friday. The girl said she and a friend had gone to rent a movie and she saw the man near a lamppost with his zipper down and his genitals exposed. The man, in his late 30s or early 40s, walked to the back of the store when he saw the girls.
E-mail threats sent
AUSTINTOWN -- A 58-year-old gay man told police he received three threatening e-mails at 7:34 and 9:09 a.m. and 12:34 p.m. Saturday from a man who calls himself Ray. The e-mails made death threats against blacks, Jews, Hispanics and homosexuals. The last e-mail was sent to about 90 other people, according to police.
Apartment burglary
AUSTINTOWN -- A 72-year-old Kirk Road man said his apartment was broken into sometime Friday. He found the deadbolt pried open and the safe open. A safe drawer that contained $500 worth of silver coins, an undisclosed number of silver certificates, a $300 gold necklace, $300 gold peso ring and another ring of undetermined value were stolen.˚
