NEW YORK-PENN LEAGUE Scrappers top Jammers, snap losing skid
JAMESTOWN, N.Y. -- Designated hitter Rickie Morton hit a home run and Nicholas Moran pitched six strong innings, to lead the Mahoning Valley Scrappers to an 8-5 victory over the Jamestown Jammers in a New York-Penn League game Sunday at Diethrick Park.
The victory improved the Scrappers' record to 6-14 and snapped their four-game losing streak. Jamestown, which plays host to Mahoning Valley in the finale of a four-game series at 7:05 tonight, fell to 9-10.
Piling it on: Catcher Angel Bastardo doubled twice for the Scrappers, who erased a 2-0 deficit after the first inning with single runs in the second and third, then took the lead for good with a two-run rally in the fourth inning and four more runs in the fifth.
Francis Finnerty added two hits and a pair of RBIs for Mahoning Valley. Finnerty began the game batting just .161.
Morton also singled, while John Van Every went 1-for-3 and drove in two runs. Miguel Quintana also drove in a run, boosting his team-leading RBI total to 12.
Moran (2-0) scattered six hits, allowing two runs (one earned) while striking out four and walking two. Moran, whose ERA dropped to 2.84, has 15 strikeouts and just two walks in 19 innings this season.
Ron Colvard allowed three runs in two innings of relief. His ERA rose to 12.54.
Colvard was followed in the ninth inning by Brian Farman and Chris Cooper, who retired the only batter he faced for his third save of the season.
Bad outing: Kyle Colton (1-2) allowed eight hits and eight runs (six earned) in 41/3 innings to take the loss for Jamestown, which saw its two-game winning streak snapped.
Chris Trevino pitched 32/3 innings, allowing one hit and no runs. Trevino has an ERA of 0.00 this season through 13 innings.
Billy McCarthy, who began the game with a .239 batting average, went 3-for-5 for Jamestown. Travis Anderson hit a double and drove in three runs. Center fielder Marcus Hambrick also doubled. He went 1-for-4 to raise his batting average to .100 (3-for-30).
After tonight's game in Jamestown, the Scrappers have an off-day Tuesday. They return to Cafaro Field for three games against the Staten Island Yankees beginning Wednesday, before embarking on a six-game road trip to Williamsport and Batavia.
