Toys 'R' Us gives grantto counseling center
The D & amp;E Counseling Center, a nonprofit provider of mental health and substance abuse services for children and adolescents, has received a $10,000 grant from Toys "R" Us Children's Fund. The money will be used at the center's Camp Challenge summer camp for a Toys "R" Us Good Behavior Store.
D & amp;E's Camp Challenge provides therapeutic programming for children, ages 7-12, that helps them learn appropriate behaviors in class and at home and help them learn to make friends.
While at camp, the children can earn points for good behaviors that can be exchanged for toys or games. Greg Cvetkovic, D & amp;E executive director, said the grant will permit more children to enroll in the camp's token economy therapy program.
Easter Seals honored
Easter Seals of Mahoning, Trumbull and Columbiana Counties received an Excellence in Service Innovation Partnership award from National Easter Seals for its Enhanced Child Care Services program. The program is a collaborative effort, between pre-school, child care, outpatient medical rehabilitation and Head Start, to provide integrated programs and services to medically fragile children.
The one-step concept eliminates the need for families to coordinate transportation and decreases the time children are transported, among other things. Prior to the partnership with Easter Seals and Head Start, transportation was the greatest obstacle to services, officials said.
Talk With a Doc
YOUNGSTOWN -- Humility of Mary Health Partners' Talk With a Doc programs on hypertension and kidney disease will be at 7 p.m. July 19 at St. Elizabeth Health Center's Finnegan Auditorium and July 30 at St. Joseph Health Center's classrooms in Warren. Guest speakers, Dr. Augustine Biscardi and Dr. Ramesh Soundararajan, are members of the Northeast Ohio Kidney Group, nephrologists on the staffs of St. Elizabeth and St. Joseph, and associate professors at Northeastern Ohio Universities College of Medicine. The programs are free and open to the public. Registration is not necessary.
Health screenings
WARREN -- St. Joseph Health Center and Champion Kiwanis Club are offering adult health screenings from 7-10:30 a.m. July 21 at St. John Lutheran Church, 5734 Mahoning Ave., Champion. The fee is $35. The screenings are a chemistry profile, including cholesterol and triglycerides, blood county and blood pressure, bone density for women and prostrate cancer information for men. Radio Reading Servicecelebrates 25 years
YOUNGSTOWN -- Youngstown Radio Reading Services is celebrating 25 years of broadcasting print materials, not otherwise available, to the blind or print-handicapped. YRRS operates as a sideband station of WYSU-FM, and is funded through the Ohio Educational Broadcast Commission, the United Ways of Mahoning and Trumbull counties and private donations. Specially tuned radios are provided free of charge to qualified listeners in Mahoning, Trumbull, Columbiana and Mercer counties.
Originally under the auspices of the Youngstown Society for the Blind and Visually Impaired, the station is now housed at Youngstown Area Goodwill Industries.
