Players will scramble for prizes

A car will be awarded to the player scoring a hole-in-one on a particular hole.
SALEM -- The Columbiana County American Cancer Society will sponsor its 18th annual Men's Golf Classic July 23 at Salem Hills Golf and Country Club, state Route 45.
The four-person scramble will get under way with registration and a light lunch at 11:30 a.m. followed by a shotgun start at 12:30 p.m.
The 18-hole event will include a steak dinner at 5:30 p.m. and an awards ceremony afterward.
The winner of the longest drive contest will receive a prize of $200, and a General Motors vehicle will be presented to the golfer scoring a hole-in-one on a designated hole.
Categories: Teams will have the opportunity to play in three different divisions, depending on the team member with the lowest index. The winning team from each division will qualify for participation in the American Cancer Society Ohio Division State Championship Sept. 8-10 at Firestone Country Club in Akron.
Winners of the state tournament can advance to the national tournament to be held Nov. 30 and Dec. 1 at LaQuinta Resort and Spa and PGA West in Palm Springs, Calif.
Purpose: Proceeds from the tournament will be used by the society for cancer research, patient services, detection and educational programs and to support services for the community.
Mike Mercure is volunteer chairman for the event, and members of this year's golf committee are Gene Altomore, Roger Crowell, Carol Dambrogio, Saundra Hall, Pete Rademacher, Lowell Schloneger and Debra Shivers.
