Controlled hunt applications due
COLUMBUS -Hunters wanting to take part this fall in controlled deer and waterfowl hunts must submit permit applications by July 31.
Applications are available by calling the ODNR Division of Wildlife's toll-free line at (800) WILDLIFE and from wildlife district offices located in Akron, Athens, Columbus, Findlay, and Xenia or on the ODNR web site at dnr.state.oh.us
Controlled deer hunts are being held on select dates this fall and winter at the Ravenna Arsenal in Portage County, Ottawa National Wildlife Refuge in Lucas County, Lake Katharine State Nature Preserve in Jackson County, at the NASA Plum Brook facility in Erie County, and on parts of the Mosquito Creek and Killdeer Plains wildlife areas.
Controlled deer hunts for those confined to wheelchairs are being held at Killdeer Plains and the Ottawa refuge. A non-refundable application fee of $3 for each hunt is required with the application.
Special youth controlled deer hunts are also offered at the Ravenna Arsenal, Mosquito Creek and Killdeer Plains state wildlife areas and at the Ottawa National Wildlife Refuge. Eligible hunters for these hunts must be 17 and under and accompanied by a licensed non-hunting adult at least 18 or older. There are no fees required to apply for the youth hunts. Available dates are listed on the application.
Those who wish to participate in controlled waterfowl hunts this season must also submit their applications before July 31. These hunts will be held on selected dates at the Ottawa National Wildlife Refuge, and on the Magee Marsh, Mosquito Creek and Mercer wildlife areas. Special youth controlled waterfowl hunts also are available for youths 15 and under.
A non-refundable fee of $3 for controlled waterfowl hunt must be included with the application. There are no fees required when submitting youth controlled waterfowl hunt applications.
PENNSYLVANIA
Repair work set
The Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission is advising anglers and boat operators of upcoming maintenance and repair work at three public access areas in southwest Pennsylvania.
The Commission will temporarily close its New Brighton Access on the Beaver River, Beaver County, Monday. The general maintenance work there is expected to take two weeks. The access is off Routes 18 and 65 in New Brighton at River Road and 21st Street.
The ramp at the Commission's Tarentum Access on the Allegheny River, Allegheny County will be temporarily closed July 16 for three to four weeks. The access is in Tarentum, off Route 28 under the Route 366 bridge.
Aug. 6, the Elizabeth Access will be closed for approximately three weeks. The access is on the Monongahela River at the foot of Market Street in Elizabeth, Allegheny County.
HIKING
Public meeting on trails
The Ohio Department of Natural Resources will hold a regional meeting in Cuyahoga Heights on Tuesday to gather citizen input regarding a proposed statewide system of interconnected, recreational trails.
Two individual sessions will be held for public convenience: 1 to 3 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. in the Leonard Krieger Canal Way Center at the Ohio and Erie Canal Reservation, 4524 E. 49th St., Cuyahoga Heights.
