Even Jonathan Van Every's two home runs was enough to save the Scrappers from the 7-5 loss.
JAMESTOWN, N.Y. -- Jonathan Van Every did his best Jim Thome impression but the Mahoning Valley Scrappers still lost a 7-5 decision to the Jamestown Jammers in the New York-Penn League Saturday.
Van Every hit a home run over the 414-foot fence in center field to lead off the fourth inning and then belted a 342-foot homer to right in the eighth for the Scrappers (5-14) who have lost five in a row.
Thome hit four homers Friday and Saturday for the Cleveland Indians against the St. Louis Cardinals.
Tough opponent: The Scrappers have now lost five of six decisions this year to the Jammers (9-9). The two teams will play again today and Monday.
Although the Jammers took a 1-0 lead in the last of the second inning with a lead-off homer by Kevin Brown to left, the Scrappers tied it at 1-all in the top of the third.
With two away Bryce Uegawachi had an infield single and Miguel Quintana doubled him home with a shot to right.
Jamestown went in front 2-1 in their part of the third when DH Travis Anderson led off with a double and scored on an RBI single by Richard Lewis.
In the fourth the Scrappers knotted the game 2-2 when Van Every led off with a home run over the center field fence, 414-feet away.
Van Every, who finished the game 2-for-3 with two RBIs, came into the game hitting .250.
Broke it open: The Jammers used three singles, two throwing errors and a walk to score four runs in the fourth to chase Scrappers' starter Doug Lantz (0-2).
Mailon Kent, one of three Jamestown players with two hits, singled in one run after a well executed hit-and-run play put runners on the corners.
Two bunted balls were thrown away to leave the Jammers ahead 6-2 entering the fifth.
Two Scrappers' relievers, Kevin Martin and Todd Culp, combined to hold Jamestown to just three hits and two runs in the final five innings of work.
Mahoning Valley second baseman Maximo Made, who finished 2-for-4, doubled off the wall to lead off the fifth and came on to score when Zach Sorensen singled.
Sorensen finished 2-for-5 and his RBI closed the gap to 6-3.
Had opportunities: The Jammers went back up by four, 7-3, in the sixth on an RBI single by Brown but the Scrappers put up a threat in their last three at bats.
In the seventh Sorensen and Uegawachi got on base after two were out but a strike out prevented them from scoring.
Van Every homered in the eighth to close it to 7-4.
In the ninth the Scrappers got consecutive singles from Eric Thompson and Made to force Jamestown to bring on its fourth pitcher. Sorensen hit into a double play to put Thompson on third and pinch hitter Chad Peshke singled him in for the final score.
