Research
Youngstown native JoAnne Pedro-Carroll, associate professor of psychology and psychiatry at the University of Rochester, Rochester, N.Y., was recently honored for her research with children and families by the Association of Family, Court and Community Professionals.
Pedro-Carroll, director of programs for Families in Transition at the Children's Institute in Rochester, is a 1969 graduate of Youngstown Ursuline High School, attended Youngstown State University for two years and received a bachelor's degree from the University of Cincinnati. She then earned master's and doctorate degrees from the University of Rochester.
Among other accomplishments, in the 1980s she developed the Children of Divorce Intervention program, which is now being used in schools throughout the United States and in foreign countries.
More recently, she teamed up with family therapists, social workers and court officials from Rochester to create ACT For the Children, a program to teach separating parents how to reduce the stress on children and themselves.
Pedro-Carroll is a daughter of Charles and Amelia Pedro of Riverside Drive.
DOCTORS
Georgetown
Brian Veauthier, son of Nicholas Sr. and JoAnn Veauthier, West Manor Avenue, Poland, received his doctor of medicine degree cum laude from Georgetown University School of Medicine, Washington, D.C.
Dr. Veauthier, a 1992 graduate and valedictorian of Cardinal Mooney High School, earned his bachelor's degree summa cum laude from the University of Notre Dame, South Bend, Ind., in 1966, where he was elected member of Phi Beta Kappa Honor Society and Alpha Epsilon Delta, the pre-medical Honor Society.
He will begin his residency in family practice at University of Wyoming, Natron County Hospital, Casper, Wyo.
He and his wife, the former Bridget Lombard of Prospect, Conn., live in Casper.
Northwestern
Janine A. Van Lancker of Poland received her doctor of medicine degree at Northwestern University Medical School in Chicago.
Dr. Van Lancker is a 1993 graduate of Poland High School, where she was class valedictorian. She received her bachelor's degree magna cum laude from the University of Notre Dame. While at Notre Dame, she received the L.H. Baldinger Award for academic excellence and responsible leadership.
She will begin her residency training in internal medicine at Northwestern Memorial Hospital, Chicago. She is the daughter of Robert and Marianne Van Lancker of Poland.
SCOUTS
Troop 119
Corey W. Minamyer, 18, son of Mike and Becky Minamyer of Garfield Road, New Springfield, received his Eagle Scout award at a court of honor in New Springfield Church of God, where he is a member.
A member of Boy Scout Troop 119, located in the church, Minamyer joined the troop in 1994, and his scoutmaster is his father.
His Eagle service project was to build a volley ball court in a wooded area near the church.
Minamyer is troop guide and has been troop patrol leader, assistant patrol leader, senior patrol leader, quartermaster and historian. He has earned 29 merit badges. His awards include the Cub Scout Arrow of Light, God and Family Award, World Conservation Award, Camp Stambaugh Service Award and Order of the Arrow Ordeal.
He was a two-year member of the Stambaugh Tribe and a member of the Neatoka Lodge. He attended the 1997 National Jamboree at Fort A.P. Hill in Virginia.
