ON CAMPUS College news and notes

Westminster: Four former members of the men's basketball team, including three from the 2000-2001 squad, are playing professional basketball this summer. Chad Phillips (Warren JFK), Kevin Siroki (Mineral Ridge) and Andy Wormsley (Quaker Valley, Pa.) are playing in South America with the BTL Nets in the Belize Semi-Professional League. Phillips and Wormsley just recently graduated, while Siroki graduated in 1992. Phillips and Siroki played key roles in the Nets' 91-73 win over Data Pro Phoenix Raiders. Phillips had 19 points and eight rebounds in his first game with the Nets. Siroki, who has played professionally in Belize for several years, had a team-high five assists.
Guard J.P. Maszczak (Canfield), another recent Westminster graduate, is with the Delaware Destroyers of the National Rookie League. Maszczak played but did not score in the Destroyers' season opener, a 104-83 setback to the Philadelphia Force June 26. The NRL is a five-team semi-professional league with teams located on the East Coast.
Phillips, Wormsley and Maszczak helped Westminster to a 19-6 record last season under the guidance of coach Jim Dafler. Siroki is a former Titan assistant coach who now is the top assistant at Tiffin University.
Thiel: Tami Hassell (Hubbard), a sophomore second baseman for the softball team this season, made the Presidents Athletic Conference second team. Hassell started all 36 games and batted .304 (38-for-125), tied for the team lead in runs scored (28) and had 13 RBIs. Her .304 average ranked No. 6 on the team, which posted a 17-19 record for coach Jo Ann Gordon. Thiel also had four other area players on the roster, including Jessica Yeager (Jackson-Milton), a senior catcher and third baseman who started 35 games. She ranked No. 5 on the team in batting (.309, 29-for-94), scored 18 runs and drove in nine. Nikki Willrich (Girard), a junior second baseman and third baseman, played in 11 games, starting six, and batted .450 (9-for-20). Jessie Peterson (Reynolds, Pa.), a sophomore outfielder started 36 games and batted .216 (22-for-102) with 18 runs scored and 10 RBIs. Erin Orahood (Pymatuning Valley), a freshman outfielder, played seven games, starting two, and batted .143 (1-for-7).
Baldwin-Wallace: Chuck Scarbrough, who led the Howland High golf team to a 23-4-4 record the past two years, will attend Baldwin-Wallace and join the golf team. Scarbrough had the lowest stroke average in the Metro Athletic Conference the past two years, and was named MAC Most Valuable Performer. The son of Charles Scarbrough, he made the Honor Roll and National Honors Society, and won the 1998 Holocaust Poetry Contest.
In volleyball, Chris Hyde of Farmdale and Maplewood High, a sophomore this year at B-W, has decided to join the Yellow Jackets' volleyball team this coming season after bypassing the sport as a freshman. A 5-foot-11 right-side hitter, Hyde is planning to major in fitness management. She is the daughter of Caroline and Nelson Hyde. While at Maplewood, Hyde was a four-year letter winner in both volleyball and basketball. In volleyball, she made the All-East Suburban Conference team three times, and was the ESC Most Valuable Player in 1998. Her senior season, she connected on 93 percent of her serves, 40 service aces, 23 kills and 396 set assists. In basketball, Hyde made the All-ESC first team three times. She was a member of the National Honor Society.
Allison Carson (Springfield) and Katie Winczner (East Palestine) will attend B-W this year and continue their volleyball careers. Carson, a 5-11 middle hitter, was voted the Springfield High Senior Female Athlete of the Year. A four-year performer and three-year letterman in volleyball, Carson earned several honors as a senior. She was third-team All-Ohio and first-team All-District and All-Inter-County League, and District Player of the Year. She also was a four-year member of the basketball and track teams, and won four letters each. In basketball, she was a first-team All-ICL choice as a senior. Carson made the National Honor Society and Academic Hall of Fame, and received the U.S. Army Reserve Medal for national scholar-athletes. She is the daughter of Rhonda and Bob Carson of New Middletown.
Winczner, a 5-10 left-side hitter, is transferring to B-W after spending her freshman year at Ohio Dominican. While at East Palestine, Winczner played four years of volleyball and basketball and won three letters in each sport. In volleyball, she was a second-team All-Tri-County League and all-district pick as a junior and senior. In basketball, she was a two-time All-TCL pick, honorable mention all-district and an All-Columbiana County choice. The daughter of Cynthia and Louis Winczner, she plans to major in middle childhood education.
In football, B-W is adding four area recruits -- Pat Pearson (Girard), Nate Wilder (Mooney) and Ryan Hodros (Springfield) and Matt Walker (Springfield). Pearson (5-9, 190), an outside linebacker, will major in education. He was a two-year letterman and a two-time All-Metro Athletic Conference pick. The son of Sarah and John Pearson, he also was a four-year letter-winner in basketball, and was named All-MAC four years.
Wilder, a wide receiver and outside linebacker, will major in marketing and information technology. He had a 3.7 grade-point average, and made the Honor Roll four years.
A two-year letterman in football, Wilder made the All-Steel Valley Conference second team. On offense, he caught 12 passes for 128 yards and two TDs. On defense, he had four sacks and three fumble recoveries. He also won two letters in basketball, and led the SVC in field goal percentage with 64 percent, and averaged 10 points and six rebounds per game.
Hodros (6-2, 230) was an offensive guard and defensive tackle who played four years of football and won three letters. He plans to major in English. Hodros made the All-Inter-County and All-Quad County first teams as a junior and senior, and was an All-NEO honorable mention the two seasons. He was a member of the National Honor Society and the Academic Hall of Fame.
Walker (5-8, 155), a defensive back and kick-return man, will major in education. A two-year letterman in football, he made All-ICL as a junior and senior; and All-Quad County as a senior, and served as a team captain his last year. He also won three letters in baseball, and made All-ICL two years.
