Police thwart attempted suicide

LOWELLVILLE -- Officers from four police departments said they curbed the suicide attempt of a 24-year-old Austintown man who was found bloody near the high school football stadium around 12:51 a.m. today.
Lowellville police said an officer spotted the man, who had a knife, and tried to assist him.
The man walked past officers toward the CSX railroad tracks. Youngstown Patrolman Steve Schiffhauer and police dog Rico located the man along the Mahoning River.
His car was later discovered near the Stavich Bike Trail.
Lowellville Police Chief William Vance said the man was hypothermic when they found him.
"He's real lucky he's alive," said Vance.
Officials from St. Elizabeth Health Center, Youngstown, would not release his condition.
Officers from Poland and Coitsville assisted in the rescue.
