STRUTHERS -- A 60-year-old man was in critical condition today at St. Elizabeth Health Center, Youngstown, with a cut on the back of his head and possible broken ribs after falling into the ravine at Yellow Creek Park while riding a mountain bike Tuesday evening, the fire department said.
Police said the man, identified as Joseph C. Lewis of McClure Street, was about 200 yards north of Wetmore Drive at 7:33 p.m. when the bike went off the trail and fell 8 feet down an embankment into the creek.
Lewis, who suffered a deep cut behind his right ear and may have suffered an internal injury, was removed from the scene with the aid of a basket, an all-terrain vehicle and ambulance, police said. Lewis' 10-year-old granddaughter, Kassie Holden, of Fifth Street, with whom he had been cycling, located a Mill Creek MetroParks policeman and directed him to the accident scene.
Legal services grant
YOUNGSTOWN -- Northeast Ohio Legal Services received a $5,000 grant from the Youngstown Foundation this week. The grant will be used for computer equipment and general operating expenses. Northeast Ohio Legal Services provides free civil legal assistance to low-income residents in Mahoning, Trumbull, Columbiana and Wayne counties.
Lowellville overpayment
LOWELLVILLE -- An audit of the village from Dec. 31, 1998, through Dec. 31, 1999, found that a part-time custodian took too much sick leave and must pay back about $214. The audit, released today, alleges that Lynn Alfano, wife of Village Administrator Phillip Alfano, used 171 hours of sick leave when she was allotted only 100.33 hours.
She has been ordered by auditors to repay the money to the village general fund.
Marking the way
WEST MIDDLESEX, Pa. -- The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation will be installing raised pavement markers on state Route 60 from the Lawrence County line north to the Interstate 80 interchange next week.
The markers are installed on the center line of the road, serving as reflectors to aid drivers' vision at night. There will be intermittent lane restrictions as the work is done, and motorists are advised to use caution. The work begins Monday.
Missing man sought
RAVENNA -- The search for a missing Canton man continued Wednesday evening near the Kirwan reservoir at West Branch State Park.
An abandoned boat registered to Timothy Heaton was found by state park officers at 4 p.m. Sunday on the north shore of the reservoir. Local law enforcement officers and search-and-rescue units joined in the search for Heaton on Monday morning. He was officially declared missing at 8:40 p.m. Sunday.
Drain-cleaner bomb
YOUNGSTOWN -- Another drain-cleaner bomb has been found in the city, this time on Oak Street near Garland Avenue on the East Side. Detective Sgt. Zaida Miranda spotted a smoking two-liter plastic soda bottle in the street late Tuesday and notified the fire department.
Police suspect a 15-year-old boy who lives nearby and was arrested a month ago for possession of such an explosive. This makes the fifth drain-cleaner bomb to be found since mid-April.
Children's ID program
BOARDMAN -- Township police will have an ident-a-kit service, during which children are photographed and fingerprinted for emergency purposes, from noon to 3 p.m. Saturday at Dick's Sporting Goods on Maple View Court. There also will be a demonstration by one of three township police dogs and a handler at 2:30 p.m.
Fireworks taken
NORTH LIMA -- A Mahoning County deputy sheriff took a 17-year-old South Park, Pa., boy into custody late Wednesday. He was caught with three cases of fireworks at BJ Alan Fireworks on Columbiana-Canfield Road, Beaver Township.
A store employee had reported seeing several teen-agers under a storage trailer. When the deputy confronted the 17-year-old boy, he threw the fireworks, worth $534, to the ground near his van, reports show.
He was taken to the juvenile justice center, and his four companions, also from South Park, were questioned and released.
Work will delay traffic
WEATHERSFIELD -- Traffic will be delayed on Salt Springs Road from the Trumbull County line north to Interstate 80 beginning at 6 p.m. Friday.
Crews under contract with the Trumbull County Engineer's Department will be resurfacing the road. Work is expected to be completed by 4 p.m. Sunday.
