RAVENNA -- The search for a missing Canton man was expected to resume today in the area near the Kirwan reservoir at West Branch State Park.
An abandoned boat registered to Timothy Heaton of Canton was found by state park officers at 4 p.m. Sunday on the north shore of the reservoir. Local law enforcement officers and search-and-rescue units joined in the search for Heaton on Monday morning. He was officially declared missing at 8:40 p.m. Sunday.
The Ohio Department of Natural Resources is coordinating the search.
Liquor license hearing
YOUNGSTOWN -- A hearing will be at 2 p.m. July 25 in Mahoning County Common Pleas Court to determine whether a Glenwood Avenue bar can retain its liquor license.
Crestview Inc., which operates Glenwood Tavern & amp; Patio, is contesting the results of a May 8 election in which voters in the bar's precinct voted to create a "dry" precinct, meaning that liquor establishments could no longer sell alcoholic beverages.
Atty. Don Hanni Jr. said the precinct boundaries were changed by the county board of elections between the time election petitions were circulated and the election was held, which hampered the business's efforts to campaign for retention of its liquor license.
Poland commended
POLAND -- The state auditor has commended Poland Township for its audits for 1999 and 2000. Auditor of State Jim Petro said no citations were reported in the audit reviewed by the Youngstown Regional Office of Auditor of State.
"Poland Township officials and Clerk Cathy Stacy have given a clear accounting of their financial practices," Petro said. "Governments must have solid records upon which to base future decisions."
Petro conducts audits for nearly 5,000 state and local governments.
Holiday patrols increase
GIRARD -- City police have added traffic patrols through Wednesday. The focus of the program is to increase safety for holiday travelers, police said. Emphasis will be on U.S. Route 422, state Route 304, Liberty Street and Trumbull Avenue.
Studio burglarized
AUSTINTOWN -- A $100 power box, $400 worth of ink and $300 in tubes used for tattoos were reported stolen from 3757 Mahoning Ave., Studio 13.
The studio's tenant, a 33-year-old Cortland man, said he found a previously locked inside door open at 5:46 p.m. Tuesday. Two other people have keys to the studio, and the space is in the process of changing ownership, the man told police.
Student reports rape
YOUNGSTOWN -- A 22-year-old Youngstown State University student told police she was raped Monday night in her Bryson Street apartment on the North Side when she returned home from shopping.
The woman said a man walked out of her kitchen and raped her at knifepoint around 9:30 p.m. She said she doesn't know how he got into the apartment.
Through her description, police think the suspect is a teen-ager on probation who lives on Ohio Avenue.
Park features programsabout water's power
PORTERSVILLE, Pa. -- Programs about various birds, as well as water safety, will be featured at McConnell's Mill State Park, on U.S. Route 422.
"Water, the Deceptive Power" will begin at 2 p.m. Wednesday at the Old Mill. Participants will learn about the danger and power of fast-moving water, with an emphasis on safety considerations when planning a trip on the water.
"Raptors," will start at 7 p.m. Friday at the Old Mill. A naturalist will discuss various characteristics of raptors, such as hearing, night vision and flight.
Police find stolen guns
FARRELL, Pa.-- Police said they found two stolen handguns while searching a suspicious car this weekend. Police said they were informed by a group of people around 2:30 a.m. Sunday that several people around the car had guns.
Police searched those individuals but found no weapons. The driver of the car, owned by a Campbell, Ohio, woman, refused permission to allow officers to search the vehicle. Police impounded the 1998 Pontiac and got a search warrant. They said they found .45-caliber and .357-caliber handguns in the car. The guns had been reported stolen in Boardman, police said.
No charges were filed, but police said the investigation is continuing.
