Judge refuses to lower bond for man accused of child rape

WARREN -- A Trumbull County Common Pleas judge has turned down a request by a man accused of raping a child to have his bond reduced.
Judge Peter Kontos denied William J. Gammon's request Monday to reduce his $50,000 bond.
Gammon, 21, of Sharon, Pa., faces a charge of rape. Sarah Kovoor, an assistant Trumbull County prosecutor, said Gammon is accused of raping a 3-year-old girl.
Judge Kontos said he agreed with Kovoor that the $50,000 bond is reasonable.
Anthony Consoldane of the Ohio Public Defender's Commission, who is representing Gammon, said his client denies the allegation and has "an alibi witness."
Consoldane declined to provide any other information.
Gammon, who is being held in the county jail, was secretly indicted last week by a Trumbull County grand jury. If convicted of the rape charge, he could face 10 years to life in prison, Kovoor says.
Consoldane noted that Gammon was convicted in 1999 of sexual battery. Gammon served six months in the county jail and was placed on probation, Consoldane said.
The victim in that case was a 14-year-old girl, Consoldane said.
