HANOVERTON Village gets finances to repair sidewalk

HANOVERTON -- The village will receive federal money to make sidewalk repairs.
Council member Jane Wilson told her fellow lawmakers Monday night that the $74,400 U.S. Community Development Block Grant will also be used to provide curbing, storm drains and catch basins.
Wilson said the sidewalk project had been up to receive a grant for several years and the planning for the work started about 10 years ago.
Sidewalks will be replaced along State Route 9 on the west side of street from the County Pride store south to the intersection with Market Street.
Costs: Wilson said a Salem firm, Howells & amp; Baird, had done the engineering work for the project and the village will be responsible for paying about $11,000 engineering cost.
Council member James Myers said although he didn't agree with the project's overall cost, he believed it was necessary for the village and said council should proceed.
Myers said village finances could be adjusted to pay for the engineering cost, even if it meant surrendering certificates of deposit the village has earmarked toward other projects.
Wilson said the project will probably begin later this summer and the county office of economic development will handle it.
Council will have a special meeting at 7 p.m. July 16 to discuss the financing for sidewalk project and also have the 2002 budget hearing. The meeting will be at Village Hall.
