City council refuses to pay lawyers $15,000
CORTLAND -- City council is refusing to pay a $15,000 bill to a Cleveland law firm.
During its meeting Monday, council voted to reject a measure that would have paid the firm of Johnson and Angelo $15,000 for legal consulting services.
City officials said the $15,000 is above the $25,000 cap that the city agreed to pay the firm.
Officials at the law firm could not be reached for comment. The firm was hired in September to provide legal services for the city until a law director was appointed. Atty. Patrick Wilson was appointed law director last month.
Warren police probebusiness break-ins
WARREN -- City police are investigating two break-ins that occurred early today. According to reports, someone broke windows at Steve's Shell, 1708 Youngstown Road S.E., and The Bakery Outlet, 1850 Youngstown Road S.E., about 5 a.m. today and entered the businesses.
Police said they do not know if anything was taken.
First group meetingscheduled for Monday
WARREN -- The new Trumbull County chapter of the National Alliance for the Mentally Ill will have its first meeting at 7 p.m. Monday at Community Solutions Association, 320 High St.
The group will present a setting for relatives of the mentally ill to share difficulties and concerns. Regular meetings will be the second Monday each month.
Group merger in effect
WARREN -- The merger of Community Solutions Associations and CONTACT Community Connection, announced in May, became effective on July 1.
CONTACT's telephone hot line and community services directory will continue to be offered by Community Solutions Association, which receives funding from Trumbull LifeLines (formerly Trumbull County Alcohol, Drug and Mental Health Board.)
Inside-out picnic setat SCOPE Senior Center
WARREN -- SCOPE Senior Center will have a backward, inside-out picnic for grandparents and their grandchildren from 10 a.m. to noon July 21 at the SCOPE building, 220 W. Market St.
Food will be served, and picnickers are encouraged to create their own look by wearing clothes inside out.
Sergeants sworn in
WARREN -- Police officers William A. Boldin and Jeffrey L. Cole were sworn in Monday as the city's newest sergeants. They both moved up from the rank of patrolman, and are filling spaces left vacant by retirement and promotions.
Chapel open house
KINSMAN -- An open house for the newly completed All Faiths Chapel at Kinsman Cemetery will be from 2 to 4 p.m. July 15. The Kinsman Cemetery Association is sponsoring the event.
Police find stolen gunswhile searching car
FARRELL, Pa.-- Police said they found two stolen handguns while searching a suspicious car this weekend. Police said they were informed by a group of people around 2:30 a.m. Sunday that several people around the car had guns.
Police searched those individuals but found no weapons. The driver of the car, owned by a Campbell woman, refused permission to allow officers to search the vehicle.
Police impounded the 1998 Pontiac and got a search warrant. They said they found both a .45-caliber and a .357-caliber handgun in the car. The guns had been reported stolen in Boardman, police said.
No charges were filed but police said the investigation is continuing.
Search continuesfor missing man
RAVENNA -- The search for a missing Canton man was expected to resume today in the area near the Kirwan reservoir at West Branch State Park.
An abandoned boat registered to Timothy Heaton of Canton was found by state park officers at 4 p.m. Sunday on the north shore of the reservoir.
Local law enforcement officers and search-and-rescue units joined in the search for Heaton on Monday morning. He was officially declared missing at 8:40 p.m. Sunday.
The Ohio Department of Natural Resources is coordinating the search.
