PILGRIMAGE TO MECCA: Shukriyyah Abdul-Salaam, far right, and her husband, Elus, made the Hajj, a pilgrimage to Mecca required of all Muslims, in 1997. They traveled with a group of pilgrims from throughout the United States, meeting up with some 3 million others in Saudi Arabia.
