A nicer new year?
Although common New Year's resolutions include doing more exercise or quitting smoking, resident "Saturday Night Live" newscaster Tina Fey says she just wants to be nicer to people -- famous people, that is.
"My New Year's resolution is to cut back on mean celebrity jokes," Fey told Entertainment Weekly, later adding, "and like every New Year's resolution, I'll probably break it Jan. 3."
Fey is the first female head writer for the long-lasting late-night sketch comedy show. She also is co-anchorwoman of "SNL's" "Weekend Update" along with Jimmy Fallon. She joined the show's writing staff in 1997.
Police on the TV beat
What television show portrays the work of police officers most realistically? "NYPD Blue," according to a poll of more than 1,000 subscribers to American Police Beat magazine. Voters also cited "Law and Order," "Barney Miller" and "The District" for their realism, according to the poll, also conducted by Court TV. When asked how television news coverage affected their jobs, more than two-thirds said it made it more difficult. Sixty percent of the police officers also said they think violence on television makes young people more violent.
