Jailed Mexican singerto give birth in hospital
Mexican pop singer Gloria Trevi will be transferred out of a Brazilian jail to a hospital so she can give birth next month, judicial officials said earlier this week. Trevi, who says she was raped by federal police while in jail, has been in custody for 19 months on charges that she and several of her employees corrupted a 17-year-old girl whose parents had turned the girl over to their care for musical training. She is expected to be sent back to Mexico for trial. Police investigators said the 31-year-old Trevi artificially inseminated herself in an attempt to stay in the country.
Anthrax band adds linkon Web site to CDC
NEW YORK -- Anthrax, the band, wants to make sure that no one mistakes them for the eponymous bacteria.
So they've set up a link on their official Web site, www.anthrax.com, to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, to offer people health information.
The metal band from New York, which formed in the early '80s, was thrust into the spotlight in October when anthrax began showing up in the mailrooms of government offices and news organizations as a weapon of bioterrorism.
"It was surreal," Scott Ian, the band's founding member, told The New York Times for Thursday's editions.
After the bacteria began appearing, the guys in the group joked that they were changing their name to Basket Full of Puppies.
At a sold-out metal benefit concert in New York last month, the five members of Anthrax wore shirts that spelled out the words, "We're not changing our name." Money raised at the show went to relatives of the police officers and firefighters who died in the Sept. 11 World Trade Center attack.
Spacey won role against all the odds
Kevin Spacey plays an emotionally damaged man struggling to find his place in the world in "The Shipping News." In real life, the two-time Oscar winner faced a long struggle of his own to land the juicy part of Quoyle in Lasse Hallstrom's big-screen adaptation of the best-selling novel by E. Annie Proulx.
"I read it six years ago and immediately called my agent," he recalls to TV Guide Online. "I said, 'I've got to do this.' When he told me that John Travolta had already committed to the project, I hung up the phone and wept like a small child. But I didn't give up.
"I kept checking back and I heard things like, 'You'll never play Quoyle. You're not right for it.' But patience is a virtue and I hung in there. When John dropped out, and after Billy Bob Thornton passed, I finally got my chance."
The star of "The Usual Suspects," "American Beauty" and "K-Pax" said he could truly relate to the role, though many will find it odd.
"I was excited to portray Quoyle because it's so different than anything anyone has ever seen me do," Spacey says.
