Iron suspected in fire
DEERFIELD -- The fire chief suspects a hot iron left on by an absent owner ignited nearby clothing, causing a fire that destroyed a mobile home and its contents Saturday evening.
Fire Chief Miles Felmly said the owner, who returned home after the fire was extinguished, said he wasn't sure if he had turned the iron off.
Felmly also said the home at 1543 state Route 225 had faulty wiring and inadequate fuse protection and estimated damage at $65,000 to the home and $20,000 to its contents.
The home, which had a built-on addition, was fully engulfed when firefighters arrived four minutes after a passer-by reported the fire at 6:25 p.m., he said.
Palmyra, Edinburg and Berlin Center firefighters assisted Deerfield firefighters.
Blaze damages house
YOUNGSTOWN -- A fire heavily damaged an occupied two-story wooden house at 195 W. Myrtle Ave. on Saturday evening.
Firefighters responding to the blaze at 6:13 p.m. initially thought someone was inside the house, but found nobody there, said Battalion Chief Terrence Jordon.
No cause or damage estimate was available, but Jordon said the blaze may have originated in the living room.
