YOUNGSTOWN -- Ed Webster made a driving layup with 10 seconds remaining to give Canton Timken a 50-49 victory over Chaney in a City Series game Friday at Chaney High.
Webster, a 6-foot-2 senior guard, had only six points with one field goal in the first half when his team trailed 25-22 at the intermission.
With 10 of his 11 field goals in the second half, he finished with a game-high 26 points, eight above his team-leading 18-point average, as he tied the score on three occasions and gave his team the lead twice, the last time for the game winner.
"This was a big game for us, but we came in flat and without two starters," Webster said. "We got it together defensively, and I got good passes from my point guard, Andre Floyd, and was able to take it to the hole."
Injuries: Timken was without a pair of 6-2 starters in the injured Erik Russelle and Lamar Broyles, who missed the team bus.
"Coming in here without a pair of our big guys and winning against a good program means a lot to us," Timken coach Rick Hairston said. "Chaney gave us a lot of trouble defensively with their 1-3-1 zone, and early on we didn't get the looks we wanted.
"In the second half, we had better ball movement and were able to take it to the basket as Webster got in a groove with good scoring rhythm."
Chaney, which got 22 points and 16 rebounds from senior Roy Austin, broke a first quarter 10-10 tie opening the next quarter with a Jason Bowlen basket off a Timken turnover.
The Cowboys took that 12-10 lead to 19-13 at the five minute mark and never relinquished it until Webster's goal opened the final period of play, tying the score at 38-38.
Losing streak: The Cowboys (3-5), who have now lost five consecutive games, took the largest lead of the game, 34-26, at the 3:55 mark of the third quarter on the first of a pair of 3-pointers by Chris Childers.
A 12-footer by Webster put Timken on top 44-42 with 4:17 left in the game, giving the Trojans their first lead since a 10-8 first quarter advantage.
Austin cut Timken's lead to 48-46 and then with 1:33 left Childers banged home a baseline 3-pointer to put the Cowboys on top 49-48.
With 40 seconds left, Hairston called timeout to set up a play.
"We wanted to run a play from the side, but we couldn't because of their defense, so we played to get Webster free to the lane," Hairston said.
After Webster's basket, Chaney turned the ball over for the 23rd time.
"We didn't block out, we didn't execute and we had too many turnovers," Chaney coach Jim Stickel said.
