PULASKI, Pa. -- Pulaski Township residents will see their first tax increase in the general fund budget in about 27 years to help officials pay for a beefed up police department and legal expenses.
Pulaski supervisors passed the 2002 budget Friday afternoon, increasing property taxes for the general fund from 4.8 mills to 6.3 mills. One mill of tax generates about $12,000 for the township.
The $549,740 general fund spending plan includes money carried over from the current year and the estimated taxes that will be collected in 2002.
Terry Sander, supervisor chairman, said the tax increase is needed to pay for a full-time police officer hired in the fall and pay legal expenses the township incurred in its battle against an adult bookstore on U.S. Route 422.
The average resident will see about a $10 increase in taxes, he said.
Other taxes: While this is the first general fund tax increase in nearly three decades, there have been other taxes added over the years, officials said.
Those are separate in the budget and include the fire fund, which generates 2 mills of tax; and a light fund, for which residents pay 46 cents per square foot for land with buildings and 26 cents per square foot for vacant land.
