YOUNGSTOWN -- The Interdenominational Ministerial Alliance of Youngstown & amp; Vicinity will commemorate the signing of the Emancipation Proclamation, which abolished slavery in the United States, during an annual observance and worship service at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Shiloh Baptist Church, 238 Bright St., Campbell.
The Rev. Kelvin E. Turner Sr., pastor of Tabernacle Baptist Church, will deliver a message about the state of blacks in the Mahoning Valley.
The Rev. Elizabeth Powell will be recognized for her recent induction into the Ohio Women's Hall of Fame. The 99-year-old pastor ministers at the World Fellowship Interdenominational Church, which she founded in 1962.
New Year's service
YOUNGSTOWN -- Reed's Chapel and St. Andrewes A.M.E. churches will hold a joint watch-night service beginning at 10 p.m. Monday to bring in the new year. The service will be at Reed's Chapel, 1939 Jacobs Road, and will last until midnight.
New ACTION member
YOUNGSTOWN -- Congregation Rodef Sholom is the newest member of the Alliance for Congregational Transformation Influencing Our Neighborhoods. The Rev. Michael Harrison, president of ACTION, will discuss the organization during the Social Action Shabbat at 5:30 p.m. Jan. 11 in the Tamarkin Chapel. An ACTION outreach team training session will be from 6 to 9 p.m. Jan. 24 at the temple. A light dinner will be served.
Pastor appointed at Holy Name Church
YOUNGSTOWN -- The Rev. John E. Reiss has been appointed pastor of Holy Name Parish by Bishop Thomas J. Tobin of the Catholic Diocese of Youngstown. The appointment is effective Tuesday.
Father Reiss succeeds the Rev. Msgr. Michael Ronik, who retired Dec. 12 after serving as Holy Name pastor since 1989.
Since 1993, Father Reiss has been pastor of Our Lady of Hungary Parish and a member of the staff of the Shrine of Our Lady Comforter of the Afflicted. He was incardinated as a priest of the Diocese of Youngstown in September 2001.
Meditation planned
GIRARD -- Unity Church Centre will conduct a world healing meditation at 7 a.m. Monday.
The world healing meditation, first conducted in 1986 and sponsored by the Quartus Foundation for Spiritual Research Inc., Austin, Texas, encourages people around the world to pray for God's blessings in making the world a better place. Participants gather at noon Greenwich time.
Richard Filisky, guest lecturer and workshop leader, will conduct the meditation at Unity Church. Call (330) 539-0122.

YOUNGSTOWN -- Christmas Eve services will be at 9:30 a.m. and 8 p.m. Jan. 6 at Saints Peter and Paul Ukrainian Orthodox Church. Christmas Day services will be at 9:30 a.m. Jan. 7. Call (330) 799-3830.
Bible study offered
NILES -- Single Adult Ministry Club will hold a Bible study meeting at 7 p.m. Thursday at Northbury Colony. The meeting will include a verse-by-verse study of the book of Ephesians. Call (330) 539-6582.
