Sferra quits seat on city council



CAMPBELL -- Councilman Steve Sferra resigned from his 1st Ward seat on city council Wednesday, despite serving less than a month in the position.
Sferra told city officials gathered at a special meeting that personal reasons were behind his decision.
Council President Robert P. Yankle said Sferra's wife, Lois, asked to be appointed to the position following her husband's announcement.
"I was totally awestruck when he called me," said Yankle. "He was a nice guy. We'll see what happens now."
Sferra took the 1st Ward seat Dec. 1 after defeating Jerry Rudiak in the November election.
"I was very happy with the job," said Sferra. "I have no complaints with the city."
Sferra said he had a tear in his eye when he made the announcement.
Search: Now council has 30 days to appoint a replacement. Mayor John Dill is responsible for naming a replacement if council does not meet its deadline.
Yankle said the city is accepting r & eacute;sum & eacute;s in the mayor's office and the clerk of council's office until Jan. 8. Interviews will be conducted the following day.
