LORDSTOWN -- Village council has approved a settlement agreement regarding the roof of the police administration building.
Earlier this year, the village hired Girard consultant David C. Hall for about $1,495 to determine whether to replace the roof. It had been patched, and leaks had been repaired several times.
The police building, dedicated in 1986, is along Salt Springs Road.
The consultant also was to determine if the insulation was causing the problem.
The village will receive about $10,100 from the settlement.
Background: "There was a class-action suit in Massachusetts against the [insulation] company," Councilwoman Karen Jones said at a special council meeting Wednesday.
"The chemicals in the insulation corroded the metal in the roof."
Defendant in the suit was Beazer East Inc. of Delaware. The action involved several complaints regarding the insulation.
The roof was installed on the police building about 15 years ago and the roof's guarantee was for 15 years, limiting the amount the village could recover.
New roof: In separate legislation Wednesday, council authorized village administrators to execute a contract with Roth Brothers Inc. of Austintown for construction and replacement of the police building roof.
The company submitted the lowest bid for the work at $46,265. Jones said work is expected to start within two months.
