UNION, Pa. -- Both teams connected on 22 field goals, but Mohawk High boys had a 9-1 advantage making 3-point shots and also did better at the foul line as the Warriors defeated Campbell 64-51 Wednesday in the opening round of the Union Boosters Holiday Basketball tournament.
Mohawk will play the winner of tonight's Union-Beaver Valley Christian game Saturday at 7:30 p.m. Campbell plays the loser on Friday at 7:30 in the consolation round.
Brian Fadden scored 25 points to pace Mohawk, while Zach Cyrus added 18 for the Warriors (7-2). Anthony Wright had 14 points and 13 rebounds for the Red Devils (2-6).
Surge in second: The Warriors took the lead after one quarter, 13-10, and then exploded from the outside in the second. Mohawk scored eight field goals in the second period, seven of them threes, Cyrus hitting on four of five. The Warriors led 38-20 at the break.
Campbell was not able to chip away at the Mohawk lead in the third quarter, and the Warriors led 48-32 heading into the final eight minutes.
Wright scored six points in the final quarter, but a nine-point period by Fadden kept the Red Devils from closing the lead under double digits.
Poor shooting: Campbell was hurt again by shooting. The Devils were only 22 of 59 from the field and just 6 of 16 at the foul line. Campbell also committed 25 turnovers to just 11 for Mohawk, even though the Red Devils out-rebounded the Warriors 51-32.
"I guess I just got a lump of coal for Christmas," Campbell coach Bob Fick said. "We got a great effort from Anthony Wright, and some of the younger sophomores really did some good things, but it just was not the type of game we needed."
Sophomores Ricky Quinn and Chris Melnik had four assists each, while Antoni Zembillas had three rebounds in his first extended varsity action.
Ryan Carr had four assists to pace Mohawk, while Carr and Brian Bober had six rebounds apiece.
Girls: After Campbell scored the first basket of the game, Mohawk scored the next 23 points and coasted to a 72-23 victory in the first round of the Union Boosters Holiday Tournament.
Mohawk (7-3) will play in the championship round on Saturday at 6 p.m. against the winner of the Union-Beaver County Christian game. Campbell will face the loser of that contest at 6 on Friday night.

Quinn leader: Amanda Quinn paced the Red Devils with 12 points and 10 rebounds. Anna Zembillas also added 10 caroms for Campbell (2-6), which had 41 rebounds.
Kotuby scored 11 of her 25 points in the first quarter, including a four-point play, as the Warriors took a 24-3 lead after the first eight minutes.
