Now the nation knows what the Steel Valley Conference suspected all along -- Maurice Clarett is the best offensive high school football player in America.
The Warren Harding senior standout was named Offensive Player of the Year by USA Today, which released its 2001 All-USA football team Wednesday.
Clarett, a 6-foot, 224-pound running back, led Harding to a 9-1 regular season record and a trip to the playoffs.
He ran for 2,194 yards and 30 touchdowns in 13 games as the Raiders lost to Cleveland St. Ignatius in the Division I regional final.
In his three years with the Raiders, Clarett totaled 4,119 yards rushing with 52 touchdowns and 5,310 all-purpose yards.
During his freshman year at Austintown Fitch, Clarett had 469 yards and six touchdowns.
Clarett, who will enroll at Ohio State in January, was the only player from Ohio named to the first-team offense. Senior linebacker Mike D'Andrea from Avon Lake, however, was a member of the first-team defense.
D'Andrea had 132 tackles, two interceptions, three sacks and three caused fumbles. He is considering Ohio State, Notre Dame, Nebraska and Michigan, USA Today reported.
Senior linebacker Ahmad Brooks of C.D. Hylton (Woodbridge, Va.) was the Defensive Player of the Year.
