EAST PALESTINE School gets grant

Technology and science teachers were among those who wrote the grant.
EAST PALESTINE -- A $200,000 federal grant to East Palestine High School will give science students opportunities for interactive learning with professionals.
Superintendent Jeff Richardson said the district received a competitive Technology Learning Challenge Fund grant through a program designed to support a variety of hands-on student activities and instructional strategies that feature multimedia technology.
The literacy challenge fund is part of Ohio SchoolNet Commission's Raising the Bar initiative, which focuses on integrating technology into teaching and learning to help ensure that all students are technologically literate, he said.
The grant will pay for equipment and training to enable teachers to integrate the technology into the science curriculum, he said.
The grant proposal was prepared by high school science teachers Barb Heasley, John Daubenspeck, Lisa Bircher and Phil Colella; Dave Guy, high school principal; Joann Knight, curriculum director; and Greg Reeves, technology coordinator.
Interaction: Richardson said students will use a variety of equipment such as laptop computers and hand-held, wireless devices to interact with private-sector professionals.
Some of the students' activities will include creating multimedia presentations and gathering and analyzing data by downloading information onto laptop computers, he said.
The students and instructors also will develop a science department Web site to provide additional resources for the program, Richardson said.
