Canfield cruiser crashes
CANFIELD -- Joe Howard, a Mahoning County deputy sheriff, lost control of his cruiser on icy pavement about 5:25 a.m. today in the 6400 block of South Raccoon Road, just north of U.S. Route 224.
The cruiser came to rest between two trees, and Howard had to be cut from the car by members of the Canfield Fire Department.
He was treated for minor injuries, but the cruiser was heavily damaged, said Maj. Michael Budd.
The sheriff's department and Ohio State Highway Patrol are investigating the crash.
Woman is attacked
CAMPBELL -- A 12th Street woman told city police she was attacked on Christmas Eve after she dropped her son and daughter-in-law off at their Chambers Street home. The woman, 49, said she waited in her car about 10:30 p.m. in a parking lot at Chambers and Robinson Road to make sure the couple got inside the house. Three men and a woman attacked her with a bottle, cutting her face above an eye and an ear, she said. They kicked her after she fell to the ground and stole $200 before fleeing. The woman went to her son's house and called police.
Robbery in Campbell
CAMPBELL -- A 40-year-old 12th Street man reported that someone broke into his apartment on Christmas day, breaking down two doors and stealing three handguns and five bottles of whiskey, police reports show. The man and a woman at the residence said they heard someone kick in the rear doors at about 11:17 a.m. When police arrived, they found two doors kicked in and the home ransacked. Later in the day, about 3 p.m., the man called police to report that his car had been stolen by a man who had borrowed it and is now believed to have left the state.
Burger King theft
CAMPBELL -- A manager at the Burger King on McCartney Road reported cash was stolen from a safe in an office in the restaurant, police reports show. The manager said she arrived at work at 5 a.m. today and found the doors to the restaurant locked but the safe open and the money missing. Police had responded to an alarm call at the restaurant about 1:45 a.m. but found no signs of forced entry.
Man has stab wound
WARREN -- A 22-year-old Oak Street man was stabbed when a playful wrestling match got out of control, police reports say.
Police were called to Forum Health Trumbull Memorial Hospital to talk to William Fisher, who was being treated for a deep puncture wound to his right arm.
Reports say he was taken to the hospital by a friend Wednesday night.
The victim refused to tell police who stabbed him and changed his story several times during the interview, reports say.
Niles store is robbed
NILES -- An armed robber struck at a Youngstown-Warren Road convenience store.
A clerk at Schultz Shell Gas told police the man came in about 7 p.m. Wednesday, looked around, then pulled a gun from his pants pocket.
He handed the clerk a Christmas bag, demanding money from the register, then walked south on Frederick Street.
Tools are stolen
AUSTINTOWN -- Several tools were reported stolen from a Leharps Road business and a home under construction on Starwick Drive.
The treasurer of Youngstown Pre-Press Inc. told police an air compressor, a tool set, an air stapler and a stereo were taken from his business. An air compressor, two air nailers, three saws, a hose, and two boxes of nails were reported stolen from the home's garage. Both thefts were reported Thursday.
The theft from Youngstown Pre-Press occurred between Sunday and Wednesday morning, when a company employee found the door to the business unlocked. The theft at the home was discovered Tuesday night, after a Starwick Drive resident spotted a car in the home's driveway and called the developer.
Animal cruelty
AUSTINTOWN -- Police sent a report to the Mahoning County Humane Society about a cat's being shot with a BB gun on Christmas eve. A Lanterman Road woman told police Wednesday that she took her cat to the vet and that X-rays showed a BB in its hip. The woman said her other cat and two dogs also have been acting as if they are in pain.
