Winter weather can pose dangers for pets. Follow these tips to keep your pet happy and safe when the temperature drops:
Always bring your pet indoors during excessively cold weather.
Don't let your dog roam. The dog may slip and injure itself on icy surfaces, and if it wanders into the road, it may become trapped between traffic and high snowbanks caused by snowplows.
Don't discontinue flea and heartworm treatments for your dog and cat just because winter has arrived. Many people assume their pet won't get fleas or heartworm because the weather is too cold for fleas or mosquitoes to bite the animal while it is outdoors. During winter warm spells, however, mosquitoes can still be active, and fleas can be present in a dog's bedding or in other places indoors.
