BOYS BASKETBALL Mooney possesses balance, but St. Thomas wins 53-43



YOUNGSTOWN -- Three Cardinal Mooney High boys basketball players reached double figures Saturday, but it wasn't enough in a 53-43 loss to St. Thomas Aquinas.
Jeff Hehr led the Cardinals (3-3) with 12 points. Joe Burke scored 11 and Curtis Ingram had 10.
For St. Thomas (4-2), Kyrone Jackson netted 14 and Walt Singelton scored 10.
Newton Falls 67, Garrettsville Garfield 42: GARRETTSVILLE -- Eric Lance, Jeff Stanley and Tom Sekora scored 15, 14 and 12 points, respectively, for the Tigers (7-0).
Tom Nemet and Marty Hutchinson each pulled in seven rebounds for the Tigers.
Jim Henderson hit for 10 points for the G-Men.
Youngstown Christian 74, Jefferson County 54: STEUBENVILLE -- Aaron Young, Kelvin Turner, Frank Dota and Themi Tsarnas scored 20, 15, 12 and 10 points, respectively, for the Eagles (5-3).
Matt Byrdy, a 6-foot-6 senior, also had 12 rebounds and a career-high 11 blocked shots for the Eagles.
The Royals are 2-2.
Toronto 59, Crestview 54: TORONTO -- Zac Thomas scored 15 points, while Matt Ludewig and Matt Biddle each had 14 for the winners (4-3).
Crestivew (3-3) got 17 points from Troy Duwe and 12 more from Joe Sapp.
Although Toronto led 44-26 after three quarters, the Rebels scored 28 points in the final session to close the gap.
Reynolds 63, Union 61: TRANSFER, Pa. -- Due to injured ankles, Deacon Jones and Dan Kilgore did not start for Reynolds in its basketball game against Union.
Both came off the bench to lead the Raiders over the Scotties in a non-league game, snapping a three-game losing streak.
Jones, a 5-9 guard, scored 19 points, including 15 in the second half when the Raiders rallied from a 30-23 halftime deficit.
Reynolds (3-4) scored 20 points in the third quarter and 20 more in the fourth and led 56-46 late in the contest.
Tom McEntire scored 15 points, Kilgore scored seven points despite the injured ankle and Don Schmidt added nine points and 10 rebounds.
C.J. Hunt scored 21 points and Dave Horton had 15 more for Union (6-3).
